This song is probably about how the Government has put imaginary politicial like "standerds" for us to meet and this song clearly rebels from their "opression" and say their not pleasing anyone but themselves, friends, and family.
It's about following your own path in life. Living life as your own man. Not a slave to man, government, family expectations. The singer says only he will guide his life, and he won't change his ways. Lead never follow.

@HungerForMore I toured with these guys though the 90's. I love this album and this song is still my favorite. So much so that I have a tattoo on my right temple (on my mind), about what was on my mind (hate). We were on tour in Hong Kong and I was killing some time, walking the streets, humming the tune. Turned a corner and saw a big blue neon sign for tattoos. Done. The Chinese character for hate on my noggin. Had so much fun back then with these guys. Wish I could go back in time and do...
