The guy's saying that he is afraid of lettin himself go and things'll blow up in his face. hence, "fear of pop"

No he's saying he's afraid of writing pop music. He sees himself on a billboard and it freaks him out. He's saying "he had his shot" to write catchy radio friendly stuff.
