To "carry a torch" for someone is an old-fashioned slang term for infatuation, if I'm not mistaken.
I thought "to carry a torch" meant to continue to be infatuated with someone after the relationship ended. In the song, he and this girl are parted, but when she comes back (And the lover / Smiling for me / Without warning) he realizes how stupid it was to keep being obsessed with her after all that time because of whatever reason.
A torch isn't just love, it is unrequited love left over from a failed relationship.
What the heck ... why has nobody made any comment on this great song? My interpretation and overinterpretation: It is about a very moment when you're recovering from sort of infatuation, when you have already finished some relationship but it returned in the least expected moment. You want to have it all terminated but it still come back to you. ... don't get the '' torch'' stuff -any ideas?
