I think it's a love/hate relationship. In the verses, he claims what he will do to protect her, then in the chorus he calls her a poor misguided fool, and accuses her of trying to impose on his life. " A line for me and a line for you" could be a raference to cocaine, or how they must be categorised and stand in different lines from each other, as they are very different people. I haven't figured that part out. I think the bridge of the song "I'll be your guide in the morning, you cover up bullet holes" shows another reason why he is with her. It projects an image of success and stability onto his life.
i think "a line for me and a line for you" are referring to lines in a script, since it follows "You're just a poor misguided fool Who thinks they know what I should do" implying she argues for the both of them...hence "I lose my right to a point of view"

i adore starsailor and this is my ex girlfr. favorite song,and it's hurt when i listen it...but it is a nice pain.
i split up with my girl cos she was being influenced by others and was treating me shit because of it. i knew her better than anyone and i knew the person she wanted to be but she was too scared to be different. i still loved her but i had to let her go. she got a new boyfriend who was the same 'scared to be different' type of lad. i listen to this song an its me singing to her that whenever she's low or when she needs someone ill always be there. i just couldn't be with the ''poor misguided fool''
Real friendship and human connection supports, does not impose. Lyrics feel like they are a form of dialogue between oneself and another being who is trying to be a friend, but at the end of the day another person cannot be our own home and certainly cannot dictate what one should do for himself. A line for you and a line for me as in it's our birthright to live our lives as we want. When you give in to opinions of others, no matter their intentions, you only lose what matters most, yourself.
