Makes Me Wanna Die Lyrics
this song is gloomily mellow yet beautiful. it contains intriguing tones & the melody sends me into another world. it is unexpected & has an air of cold intimacy, almost claustrophobic. troubled yet soothing, mind blowing.
one interpretation which i only thought of a short while back is that this whole song may in fact be about marijuana. "she" being marijuana. it seems to work. "then i'll fly"/"walking on the moon" are common feelings associated with getting high, floating away. "you try to learn the universe/can't even converse in uni-verse" one of my favourite lines because it is so true. 'stoners' are truly innovators & they come up with some of the most amazing philosophies, but sometimes being stoned makes your conversation structure disjointed & slurred & all over the place. "follow where mary goes" was what set off this instant mary-jane, marijuana connection in me. was just a though though…
regardless of what this song is actually about, it is so tragically brilliant in its remote dance with simplicity that i can’t help but become entranced every time i listen to it.
i had never thought about this song being about marijuana. but it makes sense. it's a great song
When you guys talk about this song, are you discussing the Tricky original, or the Stereo MCs Weekend mix, which is loads better, imho? I first heard it during the credits of The Replacement Killers, and have loved it for the past five or so years, but that was the remix.
Great song. If its about marijuana, well, that makes it even more pertinent to my life probably! I hadn't thought of that meaning before, but then I hadn't googled the lyrics yet, either. I did think that I heard Hydroponic in there, though, but I wasn't yet sure...
Tricky wrote this song for Martina Topley Bird who read the lyrics and agreed to sing it. So she is actually singing about herself while Tricky is in the backround, it sounds like he is whispering the words in her ear before she sings them.
i agree, it should be about Martina Topley Bird...
he's like some kid and Martina trying to raise her.. it's a well known phenomenon for Tricky listeners.. guess it's valid for many relationships.... not mine anyway :) .
I read an interview where he said the song is about his daughter with Martina.
I always thought that the singer was singing/talking to herself...like letting the part of herself that can't "converse in universe" die so she can "change her stride". That or she's pissed off at a psychic b/c what she expected to come true didn't. This was the first trip-hop song I heard and I love the beat.
My interpretation about this song is meeting someone who is the epitome of everything you've ever wanted to be. And they're the new person who is now with your ex. It's not really about grieving the relationship with your ex or missing them, but more about being obsessed with the new person they're with and noticing your own shortcomings. Feeling like your own identity is obliterated almost, or like what you are presently is unworthy. Trying to come up with the will and energy to embody all the traits you've always wanted to have, but her presence makes it impossible almost.
