Aftermath (Hip Hop Blues) Lyrics

Martina :
The world revolves for,for someone
For him, for she
The world revolves for, for someone
For him for me

Martina & Tricky :
Your eyes resemble mine, you see as no others can
Here inherit my kingdom, speak of our people's plan
I'll be here for my baby, for my baby I'll be near
So many things I need to tell you, things she needs to hear

Martina :
So this is the aftermath

Tricky :
Your eyes resemble mine, you see as no others can
Here inherit my kingdom, speak of our people's plan
I'll be here for my baby, for my baby I'll be near
So many things I need to tell you

Martina :
The world revolves for,for someone
For him, for she
The world revolves for, for someone
For him for me

"Let me tell you about my mother" ( From the film, Bladerunner )

Martina :
The world revolves for,for someone
For him, for she
The world revolves for, for someone
For him for me

Tricky & Martina :
Your eyes resemble mine, you see as no others can
Here inherit my kingdom, speak of our people's plan
I'll be here for my baby, for my baby I'll be near
So many things I need to tell you, things you need to hear

How can I be sure
In a world that's constantly changing
How can I be sure

In a world that's constantly changing
How can, how can I be sure
( Backward vocals )

Just when I thought I was winning
Just when I thought I could not be stopped
Just when I thought I was winning
Just when I thought I could not be stopped
How can I be sure?

I may be wrong here, but I thought the lyric was:

'for one more poor boy there's someone

for him for she

for one more poor boy there's someone

for him for me'

Yeah I thought it was "poor boy"

This song means so much to me, just at that point that you need music to define you, at the age of 18 or so this stepped in.

Is it talking about a nuclear war aftermath, as I first thought when I heard it? That was something that obsessed me as a child, see if you can watch Threads and not find it very disturbing.

I only just became aware of "how can I be sure" by David Cassidy, and thats why I am here today.

Its very gentle, but restrained violence is there. Like being very angry with someone you love who is vunerable.

Oh Dear. The Young Rascals, I mean.

This is about a couple lying in bed post-coitus. He's thinking about the girl next to him, wondering if she's "the one," and he's going back and forth on the subject. On the one hand, he's telling her beautiful things about how she sees him like nobody else sees him, but on the other hand he keeps wondering, "how can I be sure?" The Blade Runner sample reveals that he's unsure if he's attracted to her for her or because he's subconsciously working out some kind of Freudian issue.

The last part is a reference to Japan's "Ghosts"... very, very dark and powerful song. Kind of a perfect thing to sample.

It's about his mother who killed herself when he was a young boy. Martina is singing the part of his mother. That's why her eyes resemble his etc. The Bladerunner and Japan samples make sense this way too.

Topley-Bird and Tricky have one child together, a daughter, born one month after the release of Maxinquaye....I bet this song/lyric is the aftermath of that collaboration.

For once, there's someone for he, for she. (by blood offspring,I guess that is what they are referring to)

Your eyes resemble mine, you see as no others can Here inherit my kingdom, speak of our [my] people's plans I'll be here for my baby, for my baby I'll be here [near] So many things I need to tell you, things you need to hear (see...reference to the baby in the literal sense)

(Tricky then explains the day perhaps she announced that she is having his baby, the drop bombs maybe referring to his reality, he walked away from her and baby and ended up at the pub and he felt depressed)

It was a day like no other Clocks [hanging off] It was said they dropped the bomb And I walked out the door Feeling lonely, [I see rain/as a ray] Thinking of what was once So I go in search of people [Song of] the inhabitants The air is filled with chemicals So this is the aftermath Walking over rubble Which was once [cause's calf] Down to the center Which used to be central

(I guess Tricky's feelings were at the initial outset was his uncertainty for the feelings for his child and within himself) "How can I "How can I How can I be sure In a world that's constantly changing How can I be sure

Just when I thought I was winning Just when I thought I could not be stopped Just when I thought I was winning Just when I thought I could not be stopped how can I be sure

My Opinion
