Shortcut To Moncton Lyrics
Yeah
Between the doors, shakin' heads and thinking
Light about who you're with, where you are
Blue lightning hittin' trees and lighting
Roads won't let me get too down 'cause
Sometimes you can be let down
You move on ahead in quicksand
And you hope you're still goin' east boy
It's dreamy all day drives and short parades
And I won't let it mess with my head
Just grin and live it
While you can...with wonderment
With eyes wide open
I'm taking in all I can
The small town darkness
Is singing by
In trance...I'm feeling glad
You and your friends drink, laugh
And pass out, keeping good things close
Fought till the end, it's hard to keep it all fun
I won't let it mess with my head
Won't let it mess with
Sleeping friends or their wonderment
With eyes wide open
I'm taking in all I can
The small town darkness
Is singing by
In trance...I'm feeling weird
Though the day's been really long
I still feel I'm close to nowhere
And I wouldn't let no one take my place
A warm bed, in my head I can see
The tidal wave of disappointment
See the lights shining over there
Through the night I am on the way
Between the doors, shakin' heads and thinking
Light about who you're with, where you are
Blue lightning hittin' trees and lighting
Roads won't let me get too down 'cause
Sometimes you can be let down
And you hope you're still goin' east boy
It's dreamy all day drives and short parades
And I won't let it mess with my head
Just grin and live it
While you can...with wonderment
I'm taking in all I can
The small town darkness
Is singing by
In trance...I'm feeling glad
And pass out, keeping good things close
Fought till the end, it's hard to keep it all fun
I won't let it mess with my head
Won't let it mess with
Sleeping friends or their wonderment
I'm taking in all I can
The small town darkness
Is singing by
In trance...I'm feeling weird
I still feel I'm close to nowhere
And I wouldn't let no one take my place
A warm bed, in my head I can see
The tidal wave of disappointment
See the lights shining over there
Through the night I am on the way

This is quite possibly my favourite song, it helps me get through when I'm depressed or tired of life. I think the main message to this song is that you should forget all the stuff that stresses you out and live life to the max, revelling in how amazing it is. The song hints at the importance of close friendships in life ("keeping good things close") and that a true friend always stays close and is there for you.
May even have a little dig at religion when it says "I won't let it mess with my head/ Won't let it mess with sleeping friends", yet still acknowledges life is truly incredible "Grin and live it/ While you can... With wonderment".
At the time of me hearing this song I was in a very confused state- religion WAS messing with my head and I was worried about life etc. This song actually gave me confidence to enjoy life and just really go for it!
That is a valid explaination... but, cos im weird and think of things in many different ways on purpose..and over-analysing on purpose... it could actually be about some person (whether it be Edwin or anybody else) walking to Moncton from somewhere. (Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada)(I Mother Earth is a Canadian band...) Strugging with life as he walks there.. from destination unknown really... but not giving up, no matter how hard it gets. All back to the life theory i guess... but, thats my veiw on it. (went thru many personal opinions on this one. That is my conclusion)
Edwin never really wrote any lyrics. Christian writes them.
This is one of those kinda special songs to me. I remember driving back home to Moncton from NS, trying to enjoy myself while I could, but I kept thinking too much. You gotta really let go of those intrusive thoughts; you can't question fun or you'll never have any.
I heard this one explained in concert, it's about life on the road and it can sometimes bring you down and you kind of need to shake it off. It is called Shortcut to Moncton because it was written while they were on tour driving to Moncton.
