Got You (where I Want You) Lyrics

Hey whats the point of this
Hey whats your favorite song
Maybe we could hum along

I think you're smart
You sweet thing
Tell me your name
I'm dying here

Ooh got you where I want you
Ooh got you where I want you
Oh yeah

Hey maybe just a smile
Oh hey do you know that I can dance
Could we talk for a while

I think you're smart
You sweet thing
Tell me your sign
I'm dying here

Ooh got you where I want you
Ooh got you where I want you
Oh yea
Ooh got you where I want you
I want you bad

I think you're smart
You sweet thing
Tell me your name
I'm dying here

Ooh got you where I want you
Got you where I want you
YEAH
Got you where I want you
I want you
WANT YOU

GOT YOU WHERE I WANT YOU.

This song isn't intended as a sweet love song imo. It has a very cynical and sarcastic tone. It's about manipulation, basically. The person is pretending to not have any agenda, telling the other person "I'm not after anything in particular; I just am curious/want to know more about you" He pretends to be awkward and shy but it is only a pretense. The chorus is a triumphant howl, almost like a wolf "awoooooooooooo got you (where I want you!) As the song (relationship) goes on, it becomes more and more apparent the person did have an agenda, and was exploiting her ego by flattery. He did not have honorable intentions from the very beginning. His sweet words come back to haunt her once he's finished using her.

mesh, your lyrics don't sound right with the song. i have the album, and these part of the lyrics aren't posted in the cover, but it sounds like, "hey sucker sucker, you don't got no rubber, rub it up baby girl don't you be like no other. sucker sucker, you don't got no rubber, when you rock me baby, put me thing on me lover."
anyways, this song is great. i agree with candykane, it's about a guy sweet talking a girl

This is my favorite song EVER. I think that CandyKane7 got the meaning down perfectly. It seems that the lead singer, as well as myself, is pretty shy around girls and is therefore trying to find some sort of conversation piece to start talking to a girl he admires. The "hey, what's the point of this?" kinda references the whole game you have to play to meet a girl and try to develop a relationship with her. I kinda experienced this first hand when I was trying to man up and talk to this girl in my stats class back in college. I was all nervous, but she gave me a really big smile, which totally calmed me down. To this day, my heart still melts every time I hear the "maybe just a smile" line, it brings me back to that exact moment. After I met her, we always competed to see who could get the best grade on the test/quiz, which is where the "I think you're smart, you sweet thing" part comes in, as she usually beat me. Perhaps that's the reason this is my favorite song, it's just so amazing when music relates EXACTLY to your own life, it's as if someone wrote the song specifically for you. Even years later, I still remember her because of this song and it still get chills every time I hear it.

Starting with johnemint's comment about the interview where the band members said, "It is one of the band members himself who is trying to pick up the girl but she wont give him the time of day. He is embarrassing himself and another band member comes up to him and tries to save him, but he says to him, Ive got her right where I want her."

There are possible ambiguities in the lyrics which could be intentional. The first verse, he is saying, "what's the point of this?" meaning dating could be a lot easier and more straightforward than a guy having to go up to a girl and make up a fake conversation just to get some action.

When he says "I think you're smart" - most likely this is a cover for his real sentiment, which is "I think you're hot" since men are attracted to physical beauty at first - but most girls won't go for this and want to be liked primarily for their personality. So in that sense it's a manipulation, but one that a guy has to come up with to have any success.

When he says "got you where I want you" - that's where he flips the script from a guy making a fool of himself to someone who claims to know what they are doing. At first glance it may seem like he is just kidding himself and that the song is just making fun of his arrogance; however, there are additional possibilities: 1) that she really is going to come back and go for his pickup lines and that he is correct (not likely), 2) That he has some psychological hangup with women and by confronting a hot woman and using cheesy pick up lines he is subconsciously pushing her away, which is right where he wants her.

I also think the line says "did you know that I can't dance" as sort of a subtle way of saying that the "real him" is not this exciting person he's having to pretend to be.

Finally, the rap part. I take it to mean that this whole process of walking up to girls who are hot and trying to get their phone number can be excruciatingly difficult for some guys, and even though he grew up in the ghetto, this form of torture is much worse than that experience, yet our society continues to force men to take the initiative if they want to get a girlfriend. For any guy who's attempted to walk up to a girl and do this sort of pick-up, only to be rejected, often in ways that are incredibly harsh, I have to say, the torture is real.

There's a couple other points of interest in the lyrics: 1) when he says "got you where I want you", another possible interpretation is that she's got him to the point where he actually wants her. Many people would think "of course he wants her", because he went up to her in the first place, but not necessarily. The initial approach could have been based on pure attractiveness, but her personality in being hard-to-get could have actually gotten him to the point where he wants her beyond just her appearance. Hence, "got you (to the point) where I want you"

2) When he says "I'm dyin here" - on the surface it's an expression of embarrassment, like please say yes, I'm dyin here, and that's how most people would probably take it. However, additional possible interpretations are that 1) he really is "dying" of loneliness and needs this to work out, 2) Waiting for her or some other woman to say yes can take a long time. She is acting like she has all the time in the world and can throw away guys in favor of the one she really wants; however, we are all slowly dying and we don't need to waste all this extra time playing games when it's right there in front of you. In that case, "I'm dyin here" could also mean for her to hurry up and say yes, we don't have all the time in the world for your games.

You do realize this is a guy telling a young naive girl everything she wants to hear to get her under his power. The whahooo! is analogous to a wolf howling as they prey on their target.
