I Don’t Sleep, I Dream Lyrics

I’m looking for an interruption,
Do you believe?
You looking to dig my dreams
Be prepared for anything
You come into my little scene
Hooray hooray hip hip hooray
There’s one thing I can guarantee:
You won’t have to dig, dig too deep

Said leave me to lay, but touch me deep,
I don’t sleep, I dream
I’ll settle for a cup of coffee, but you know what I really need

Are you looking to drive my dreams?
You here to run my screens?
You come, deliver my demons
Hooray hooray hip hip hooray
Are you coming to ease my headache?
Do you give good head?
Am I good in bed?

I don’t know, I guess so
I don’t sleep, I dream
I’ll settle for a cup of coffee, but you know what I really need

I’m looking for an interruption,
Can you believe?
Some medicine for my headache
Hooray hooray hip hip hooray
I’m pitching for a new direction
Pinch me when I wake
Don’t tell me my dreams are fake
You leave me to lay, you touch me deep,
I don’t sleep, I dream
I’ll settle for a cup of coffee, but you know what I really need
Leave me to lay, but touch me deep,
I don’t sleep, I dream
I’ll settle for a cup of coffee, but you know what I really need

Okay, I'll give it a go here… He wants to have casual sex with them. Sure, it's nice to come in for an actual cup of coffee after the date, and it would be nice to make a connection with them. However, he doesn't think they'll really "get" him, and will probably end up judging him, thinking he's "just a dreamer". So a nice shagging will be enough, thank you. The whole song sounds apathetic, like the singer has been through this many, many times. The song comes across with a jaded tone; as if, tired of constantly getting emotionally rejected by people, he's stopped bothering to try. Still, he's insistent about his outlook, and by holding onto it, he's being true to himself. This song always makes me feel kinda sad, but like most R.E.M. songs, it has this beautiful silver lining to it.

In addition to what was said above, I think there are layers that have to due with fame. Stipe was pretty famous when he wrote this and I think it's probable that many of the men seeking to have sex with him were attracted because of that fame. The "you looking to dig my dreams" and "deliver my demons" lines are references to the curiosity these people had about his inner life, not out of any genuine interest in him as a person but more like "what is up with this crazy rock star?"

When I first heard this I thought it was Morrissey because of the silly wordplay and pretentious lyric. But as REM were considered the US Smiths I guess it still holds up.

I'm pretty sure that the line "You here to run my screens?" is actually "You here to route my schemes?"
