Wild Flowers Lyrics

poor girl, no ma
nothing much to speak of
but a rough diamond
sleep now and your angels will come, dear
poor matilda
handcuffed to the wheel
and steering wildly
through love's fields, so blindly

forever only takes its toll on some
but tonight you're sleeping alone without him
tonight you're sleeping alone without him
and everything went up in smoke like wildflowers
wildflowers, dear

poor girl, lonely
shuffles through the parade
of a sleepless circus promenade
hold on, dear

poor girl, no ma
sister steals her a coat
for the windless breezes
sleep now and jesus will come, dear

forever only takes its toll on some, oh
but tonight you're sleeping alone without him
tonight you're sleeping alone without him
and everything went up in smoke like wildflowers
wildflowers
wildflowers
wildflowers, oh

This song is actually my favourite Ryan Adam's song and it was the first one I ever heard. I'm so happy I decided to listen to it by chance. I found it on my friend's roomates music folder while visiting her at university and then I decided to put it on a cd, since I was trying to get together songs that I didn't know and finding new music to like. One of the best choices of my life. ;)

And I relate to this song alot.

Adams is a great storyteller.

Great song. It seems to me that this song is tragic to the extreme. It's about a woman who loses her life as a result of a destructive relationship. Perhaps a suicide or maybe at the hands of her lover. The singer offers consolation that she's finally free of him. It seems odd that Ryan says that "everything went up in smoke like wildflowers". Perhaps more evocative than wildfire?

This song reminds me of Tom Petty's song - Wildflowers, obviously because they sharethe same central theme. But in this song, wildflowers has a negative connotation. Unlike in Tom Petty's song where the wildflowers inspired freedom, the wildflowers going up in smoke in Ryan's song, seems like opression from being free, or liberated? Idk, I think that could be completely off, but that's just how i see it.
