Ryan Adams sings about Carolina in many of his songs, and this song (and others) takes on different meanings when you consider that it is also a woman's name. He is traveling around, lost, distracting himself from life with random cities and meaningless activities, hoping to return home to her.
its about finding himself. he goes and becomes broke, and finds some addictions. he tries to find out who he is through all these things, looking in all the wrong places. when who he really is waiting for him at home. he doesnt know why he goes on this search...but he does. we all do things that we dont understand sometimes, but we know we have to do them for self fullfilment.
this song makes me so nostalgic! i feel like it could apply to pretty much anything we long for but is out of reach. it is about that weird dissonance between longing for the very thing we keep leaving in order find what we long for...
I think the song is somewhat about his cocaine habit, but I think that's only part of it.
The rock and roll lifestyle he's living is starting to get to him and he's dreaming of a way he could get back to living his normal life in Carolina again.

his best song period, the cover that adam duritz from counting corws does is amazing too. you can jsut hear the longing in his voice for everything he's left behind

this is such an incredibly amazing song, and i think ryan adams does it in such an elegantly longing, melancholy way that intensifies the lyrics so much more
This song is insane. I'm listening to it for only my second time right now... and it's definitely my new favourite. I think a lot of people should take a listen to it. It's very straight forward, pretty much what Hunter said,but it's longing for the south, Carolina to be specific. GIve it a listen if you happen to read this and you haven't listen. You definitely won't be disappointed.
