In My Time of Need Lyrics
will you comfort me in my time of need?
can you take away the pain and hurtful deeds?
'cause when we need it most, there's no rain at all
and dust just settles right there on the feed.
will you say to me a little rain's gonna come?
when the sky can't offer none to me
'cause i will come for you when my days are through
and i'll let your smile just off and carry me.
'cause when the calm comes down
we'll take the truck on into town
and buy whatever we can't seem to grow
i work these hands til they bleed
'cause i got mouths to feed
and i got fifteen dollars hid above the stove
will you say to me a little rain's gonna come?
when the sky can't offer none to me
'cause i will come for you when my days are through
and i'll let your smile just off and carry me.
'cause it ain't like it was on back in those days
when everyone would offer up their hand
these old bones are worn, i've grown tiresome
i know my time is surely gonna come.
will you comfort me in my time of need?
can you take away the pain and hurtful deeds?
'cause i will come for you when my days are through
and i'll let your smile just off and carry me.
lord, we married young and stayed where we came from
and gave those children everything we had
will you stay with me in my time of need?
though it seems we had such little time for us.
will you say to me a little rain's gonna come?
when the sky can't offer none to me
'cause i will come for you when my days are through
and i'll let your smile just off and carry me.

in an interview with ryan he notes this song was written because there was this old man that slept out in front of the studio he was recording at and started to think about what it would be like to be coming to terms with growing old and thinking about your life in hindsight. for the homeless old man he could have had so much before he reached the point he is at. anyway, aside from the inspiration of this song, he put his own touches on it and intially had planned to have johnny cash use it, but it was around the time cash was in the hospital or wasnt able to come record, i cant remember, so ryan went ahead and used it. its such a nostalgic song but with a touch of content and satisfaction. the first time i heard this song i hit repeat like 50 times and put myself in the eyes of the character. It is really a moving song if you imagine yourself at that age looking back.
this song is gorgeous... god, the vocals... I'LL COMFORT YOU RYAN! haha... really, this song is great... i dunno, i guess i've listened to it... but just today... i heard it and it just kinda hit me. ryan adams is amazing.
HAHA! in the very beggining of this song first you hear someone whisper "alright" and then you hear ryan say "there's somethin on my foot, it's weird" HAHA! ryan has foot fungus... ewy.
This song is simply beautiful. It's one of the only songs that actually makes me cry when I hear it... his voice is so haunting... and the simplicity in the music just calms me down. I love the line... "and I'll let your smile just off and carry me..." AH. I just love this song. Ryan Adams is great!
I saw Joan Baez recently and she covered this song. I thought it was so cool that she was into Ryan too. Now, that is a tribute to him! It was done with a lot of class, but I missed the background vocals.
I used to neglect this particular song when I first started listening to the CD, but just recently it's turned into one of my favorites on "Heartbreaker."
what a beautiful song, i really like the line "and i got fifteen dollars hid above the stove". this song make me think that no matter how bad things are its going to get better

Even though I'm a huge fan of Ryan Adams, I'll admit I was never really taken with this song. "Don't Fail Me Now", for example, is built around a similar theme but it's written much better.
I believe the title comes from a Gram Parsons classic: "In my hour of darkness, in my time of need, oh Lord grant me vision, oh Lord grant me speed."
I love how before the music you can hear stuff... The "all right".
The other songs like that, the sighs. Oh man.
