Line of Best Fit Lyrics
These things take my time and energies
Don’t stand too close without apologies
Cutthroat, cut out candid glimpses
And wind me up, I’m ready
Can’t escape this line of best fit
Can’t escape this line of best fit
These things take my time end energies
Don’t stand too close without apologies
I remember being inside something more than you
Can’t escape this line of best fit
Can’t escape this line of best fit
Can’t escape this line of best fit
Can’t escape this line of best fit
I remember being inside something more than you
Don’t stand too close without apologies
Cutthroat, cut out candid glimpses
And wind me up, I’m ready
Can’t escape this line of best fit
Don’t stand too close without apologies
I remember being inside something more than you
Can’t escape this line of best fit
Can’t escape this line of best fit
Can’t escape this line of best fit

This song is the perfect description of depression and its roots. In fact its a description of whats lacking in modern society and it has nothing to do with some hedonistic ideal of happiness. The drive to settle and seek the path of least resistance prevades the contemporary world like ebola. In the name of progress we choose the second best love, second best job and teach our children if they dont choose a career by middle school the same will happen to them. "I remember being inside something more than you" sums it up, we experience bliss in small doses and seek only to return to it yet we never can because we have no patience and after a while we believe that we were never meant to feel such contentment in the first place.
Finally, someone who truly realizes the deepness that is the "Line of Best Fit." As I've been experiencing this song in my life as a daily struggle lately, I too, find it to be more about the lack of happiness in one's life, instead of the struggles in a relationship. Somewhere along the path from childhood to adulthood, we all seem to lose faith, or hope, in the dreams that we once held so close to heart.

its about being in a relationship & as it progresses, you realize you dont like the other person much & actually grow to dislike them but you stick with it cuz its easier to tough it out than to get the hell out. it seems to describe having sex without any feeling anymore, i.e.: "wind me up, im ready", "i remember being inside something more than you".
i think when ben says "i can't escape this line of best fit" he might be meaning that he can't escape how he can't feel better or worse than average, he is just numb. When you're in love you feel joy and pain very intensely, so I think he is realizing he's not in love anymore.
absolutely gorgeous.
"I remember being inside something more than you" the female vocals at the end are so beautiful and hushed. does anyone know who sings that part?
there's two versions of this song, one off of Something About Airplanes, and one off of You Can Play These Songs With Chords; I prefer the first one.
also, by 'line of best fit', I think he's maybe saying that the relationship goes through very good and very bad times, and that the average of them (which is, on a graph, called the line of best fit) is neither good nor bad, it just feels like nothing.
This song is so great. Death Cab is one of my favorite groups right now. The female vocals throughout the song are a nice touch, especially at the end.
this song is enchanting, thats the only thing i could think of for it. enchanting.
"these things"
the music to this song is excellent. since I am a musician i pay great detail to the music of a song. their use of repitition and simple lyrics gives a euphonious quality to the song.
This song is so awesome....it's very mellow and I love the female vocals...it makes the song 6 billion times better!
"i remember being inside something more than you" I love it!
I happen to love this song for many reasons, one being that the music is fantastic and it compliments Ben's voice and lyrics perfectly. I can also relate to the meaning being that I'm young and stupid and i've experianced some of the same things. what i get from this song is that he's talking about is trying to please someone by changing who you are and compromiseing your morals, beliefs or what-not. i think the other person isnt worth doing that and no one really is. what i get is that acceptance for who you really are is what people strive for. you cant truely love someone if you want to change them.
Edited by mellow_harsher on April 28 2007, at 06:32PM
