Staring at the dark again, you left your silhouette upon my pillow
Right inside the night, I'm waiting for the light, seems like
I'm in the middle
Workin for something that I can't touch and sometimes
can't even believe in - woh
Cradled by the hands of fate the faith that
sometimes wraps around too tight - so tight
They call me free - But I call me a fool
They call me free - But I call me a fool
Well I look back at April, but she won't look back at me
No, no, no
So I pray in May for June to stay, but she just came
to wash into the sea - away
They call me free - But I call me a fool
Slipped down to Mexico, started messin with her yellow afro
Slipped down behind the sheets, started talkin bout Pistol Pete
Slipped down to the African, started talkin bout what she can do
Well here we are again, back where we started
Slipped down to the dark again
You left your silhouette on my pillow - hey
Well I'm right inside the night, I'm waitin for the light
Seems like I'm in the, seems like I'm always in the middle
They call me free - But I call me a fool;

Slipped down behind the sheets, started talkin bout Pistol Pete
Slipped down to the African, started talkin bout what she can do

It's about him giving up a girl. He thinks it'll be a good thing to be free of the relationship, but doesn't realize until afterwards how much feelings he has for her. He's afraid to jump back in, though, and decides to let whatever happens happens while he continues to love her.
This song is memorable for me when I witnessed a friend of mine go thorugh a break-up. After he finished the phone call, he told me to turn on this song and it played as he entered into the country called melancholia. It's was an awesome spectacle in the way that life can imitate art.
Such a good song Im surprised more people havent commented on it.
I think this song is about a guy and a girl who are both pretty promiscuous, and they meet up and fool around and then the guy realizes he loves her and starts to change his ways. However, she doesn't. People call him "free" because of his reputation but he just feels like a fool for being what he is and having to miss out on love.
wow that's a really good point sarahbellum, i think you're absolutely right. That's the only way all the references to what seems like a bunch of different girls fit in. He's known for never being tied down, but he blew his chance with one special girl because of it
