I never been on a railroad, as many times as they pass me by
I never crashed in the desert or seen a rodeo
I don't know much about the world wars or Vietnam
I've yet to read about Uncle Tom
Never climbed a real rock or seen Colorado
Am I the son I think I am
Am I the friend I think I am
Am I the man I think I wanna be - hey
I never had a day where money didn't get in my way
I never listened to much Elvis
I can't remember a warm December
Am I the son I think I am
Am I the friend I think I am
Am I the man I think I wanna be - hey
Cause I'm here for my sanity sanity
I am here for you
I'm here for your fantasy sanity, I am here
I am
Am I the son I think I am
Am I the friend I think I am
Am I the man I think I wanna be
Cause I'm here for my sanity sanity I am here for you
Whether or not I'm walkin in
Whether or not I'm walkin out
I'm always here for you
I never crashed in the desert or seen a rodeo
I don't know much about the world wars or Vietnam
I've yet to read about Uncle Tom
Never climbed a real rock or seen Colorado

He's spent all his life making dreams, but is just now realizing how short life really is. As he's allready well-into his life, he realizes just how much time he's spent dreaming about the man he'd like to be. He's always thought of himself by the things he wants to do, rather than the things he's done.
Excellent interpretation! Personally, my favorite by them! Would also add that he is internally reflecting upon who he is as a person, a parent, and child clarifying his devotion to the ones he loves. And I love how he opens with, "I've never been on the railroad, as many times as they passed me by," while the bands name is Train...humbling in nature, and really hits home! Also, you can hear more Hopchkiss in this one too and I wonder if he contributed most of the weight of the song.

Uncle Tom is a book written around the time of the civil war, it is about the daily life of a black slave at that time, the book showed how slaves in the south really lived and educated the north who would then try to free them by using the underground railroad, we learned about that in our U.S. History class and when i first heard my teacher say Uncle Tom i first thought of this song
and i completely agree with you bizzysignal
