There is no castration fear
In a chair
You will be
With me
We'll dance...
But no one will dance with us
In this zany town
Chim chim chim sing a song of praise
For your elders
They're in the back
Pick out some Brazilian nuts
For your engagement
Check that expiration date, man
It's later than you think
You can't enjoy yourself,
I can't enjoy myself
Move that swing
And watch it break straight like an arc
But I won't be there to leave you
'Cause I don't have a clue anymore
Maybe we can dance together?
First time you see
And then you'll be
Five times forever
And you never get lost
In a chair
You will be
With me
We'll dance...
But no one will dance with us
In this zany town
Chim chim chim sing a song of praise
For your elders
They're in the back
Pick out some Brazilian nuts
For your engagement
Check that expiration date, man
It's later than you think
You can't enjoy yourself,
I can't enjoy myself
Move that swing
And watch it break straight like an arc
But I won't be there to leave you
'Cause I don't have a clue anymore
Maybe we can dance together?
First time you see
And then you'll be
Five times forever
And you never get lost

here's what malkmus writes in the "selected song-by-song guide to wowee zowee" list appearing in Jovanovic's "Perfect Sound Forever": "Pompeii. The Peloponnesian War. Greek Gods. Perversion. We dance while the world falls down around us. Doric Columns, a belly full of OOZO!"
Make of that what you can.
I bet Malkmus read/watched "The Power of Myth."
"We don't have ideology; we don't have theology; we dance." - Shinto monk to Joseph Campbell
"Brazilian nuts for your engagement"--my favorite band in the world.
cat power (chan marshall) does a nice cover of this song.
anyway, good song.
Hi all.. since i'm not a english mothertongue could anyone give me his ideas about this song which is my one of favorites made by Pavement? Maybe there are some hidden meanings..? Thank you all - bye
It has something to do with incest. The line "There is no castration fear" refers to Freud's idea that boy repress their love for their mothers for fear of castration.
this sounds like he's at a friend's bachelor party, getting a lap dance from a stripper. he feels guilty and "can't enjoy himself" anymore, and is also envious that his friend has found true love and is getting married while he is relegated to getting cheap thrills from a private dancer.
Yeah, that makes sense, but I don't think it's right.
The ine about the castration fear is such a provocative line. I've always taken it to mean that if a man's greatest deep-rooted fear is the castration fear, then Malkmus is so fond of someone that he has managed to sublimate this fear, hence it actually sounding quite romantic.
Interesting. It could be about a stripper etc as u say above. But it could also be a sort of tribute to his mother and that unique relationship - we dance, no-one will dance with us. It doesn't have to be about incest, just about a mother and a son feeling the same way about stuff? Hmmm either way SM is a genius
