Helpless Lyrics
The air is warm
I hear the wind and the trees
I know I'm there, but I'll never be
The wind is soft tonight, the tide is low
And I know the way
(I never felt better now)
Sometimes life, it moves too slow
Slows to a crawl, and then the poetry is lost
And without speed, hope becomes certainty
And for once I'm certain
(I never felt better now)
A garden is it's own perfect world
Where everything has a place
Every leaf, every stone, every speck of dirt
But where's my place?
I even tried to get arrested today
But everyone looked the other way
I count the hours, and I count the days
But for once I'm certain
Don't want your help
Don't need your help
Don't want your help
Don't need your help
Helpless
You found a way to make me say
Help me please someone
The water's clear
I see that it's full of dimes
For every wish, I wonder why
Why all I want is something beautiful
A place to rest
(I never felt better now)
I hear the wind and the trees
I know I'm there, but I'll never be
The wind is soft tonight, the tide is low
And I know the way
(I never felt better now)
Slows to a crawl, and then the poetry is lost
And without speed, hope becomes certainty
And for once I'm certain
(I never felt better now)
Where everything has a place
Every leaf, every stone, every speck of dirt
But where's my place?
I even tried to get arrested today
But everyone looked the other way
I count the hours, and I count the days
But for once I'm certain
Don't need your help
Don't want your help
Don't need your help
Helpless
Help me please someone
I see that it's full of dimes
For every wish, I wonder why
Why all I want is something beautiful
A place to rest
(I never felt better now)

I think this song is about someone that doesn't feel like they belong in the world. "I know I'm there but will never be"...."wheres my place?" "everyone looked the other way"...someone that lives their life not being noticed and just wants to get out (suicide? ) "a place to rest" and is calling for help as they are struggling to keep living and don't want to wait for death to come....
yap, this I can relate to...

I think it is about a frog in a garden screaming for help and he's getting frustrated because nobody can hear him. It is a very sad song, really.
A frog? Ha. OK!

Yeah, definitely the death connotation there (like much of the album). Maybe it's an old person ('sometimes life moves too slow') who is alone, has lost a social sense of belonging and is looking forward to death.
yeah i understand you patton
I think this song is about a ghost who is just realizing he's dead.
This is one of the most underrated FNM songs...ghost is a good one. Maybe it's just more about those who are about to die and can't do anything about it. Possibly depression too.
Maybe it is about having time to reflect in one's old age. I never thought of it like that before.
This is my most favourite FNM song. Just beautiful.
It's just about a lonely depressed person who feels out of this world and needs a help from anyone but just can't get it because of the depression.
Very underrated song...one of the highlights of Album of the Year.
This is off The Real Thing, mate.

I retract that!!! I was listening to Woodpeckers From Mars while I was reading this and my brain got confused! Haha, apologies...

yeah the song is really about depression. notice the lyric that he tried to get arrested, but no one noticed. and how he "counts the days."
yeah i think it's about a depressed person who's just existing rather than living it's really quite sad but an awesome song
