The Only Mistake Lyrics
Made the fatal mistake
Like I did once before
A tendency just to take
Till the purpose turned sour
Strain, take the strain, these days we love
Strain, take the strain, these days we love
Yeah, the only mistake was that you ran away
Avenues lined with trees, strangled words for today
Yeah, the only mistake, like I made once before
Yeah, the only mistake, could have made it before
Strain, take the strain, these days we love
Strain, take the strain, these days we love
And the only mistake, led to rumours unfound
Led to pressures unknown, different feelings and sounds
Yeah, the only mistake, like I made once before
Yeah, the only mistake, could have made it before
Like I did once before
A tendency just to take
Till the purpose turned sour
Strain, take the strain, these days we love
Avenues lined with trees, strangled words for today
Yeah, the only mistake, like I made once before
Yeah, the only mistake, could have made it before
Strain, take the strain, these days we love
Led to pressures unknown, different feelings and sounds
Yeah, the only mistake, like I made once before
Yeah, the only mistake, could have made it before

grasping at a separate self? what do y'all think?
i think this song is about screwing up a relationship and ending up alone (Yeah, the only mistake was that you ran away) and that leads to being depressed (And the only mistake, led to rumours unfound Led to pressures unknown, different feelings and sounds )
I am taking this interpretation from the movie Control. It sounds like it could be referring to when he was cheating on his wife with the reporter. But that movie didn't seem to credible.
The only lines that wouldn't correlate were: "Like I did once before." and: "Led to rumours unfound."
it was more factual than say "The Doors" biopic. They wrote alot of the movie based on interviews of the band, Tony Wilson and the book Debbie wrote called "Touching From A Distance." I recommend it for avid fans. There will always be a mystery of Curtis's lyrics. ~Nick

easily one of the most haunting jd songs over the literal meaning of the song, i'd think it signifies how one mistake can shatter your life (life's tragic truth)
