Something Must Break Lyrics

Two ways to choose,
On a razor's edge,
Remain behind,
Go straight ahead.

Room full of people, room for just one,
If I can't break out now, the time just won't come.

Two ways to choose,
Which way to go,
Decide for me,
Please let me know.

Looked in the mirror, saw I was wrong,
If I could get back to where I belong, where I belong.

Two ways to choose,
Which way to go,
Had thoughts for one
Designs for both.

But we were immortal, we were not there,
Washed up on the beaches, struggling for air.

I see your face still in my window,
Torments yet calms, won't set me free,
Something must break now,
This life isn't mine,
Something must break now,
Wait for the time,
Something must break.

Right. Similar to Passover, though now there's only one way to understand it. Don't wish you to find your own feelings in this one.

Excepting mortality. We are not immortal, we all must break at one point.

Yeah, choosing life or death. "Razor's edge" referring to the fact that there's no in between. God what a great fucking song.

To me this song is about Ian and his extra marital affair with Annik Honore. He has to decide between staying with his wife and child, or his girlfriend. "Two ways to choose, which way to go. Had thoughts for one, designs for both." In the book Touching from a Distance, it was said that Ian thought he married too young which makes sense with the "had thoughts for one".

My Interpretation

Agreed. I'd say it was written at a time when was with his family but wished that he wasn't. I think the lyrics are directed at Annik.

Really a rather simple song. He has two roads from which to choose. He wants to break from his current path but he is still unsure of himself. He feels the time is now, yet he is fearful of making the choice. This doesn't have to be about a woman, although Curtis obviously had two women in his life...at least emotionally.
