The Shadow of Seattle Lyrics

Rain
Like tin angels falling down
Like a mission and we're halfway there
From some old dried up fried forgotten town
Why
Won't they let us be ourselves
With our potential we could toe the line
And show the bastards up with our divine
Light

Seize
All the records from the past
Hold for ransom all the artifacts
This ragged town protects them to the last
With lies

See them running heading
homeward to Seattle

Deem
All the liars in your tribe
To be the fires on the western side
Of some old front we call the war of art
Rain
Like tin angels falling down
Like a mission and we're halfway there
From some old dried up fried forgotten town
From some old dried up fried forgotten town
To some old dried up fried forgotten
Town

I agree with KC2727 on this. Whether it is about Kurt or not...I get that feeling when I listen to this. Tin angels falling down- abrupt end to nirvana. Why wont they let us be ourselves- Kurt felt he was selling people short by putting on an act for the sake of "sales" and "fans" The line about potential is really reminds me about Nirvana. How they came into the musical world seemingly almost as prophets of sorts. Song just really gets me thinking.

hmmm i hate to be the guy who disagrees but i really cant see how this is about kurt. i mean the line about a "tribe", and kurt singing that lyric once on a live tv show - thats not really very convincing. but maybe im wrong. either way its a great song - the chorus is so simple and clever and awesome. actually come to think of it reminds me of kurts music writing cos of the simple lower-string bar chords and repeated one-word choruses.

I think Cobain is right too. The first few notes made me sit up when i first heard it: dafinately reminiscant of Teen Spirit. This ragged town protects them to the last With lies Confuses me though.

It's not directly about Kurt Cobain, it's about Seattle and the surrounding areas in the early 90s. The beginnings of "grunge" were more than just Nirvana, and Wozniak was a part of that scene. He actually shared rehersal space with Cobain for a while though.

Also! The end of the song is not the real end. The song was cut off during recording and they liked it, so they left it that way. I've been a hard-core, very involved fan of Marcy for years, and in all that time I have never heard the full ending, nor has anyone else I know.

i know!! its so annoying that it cuts off right as hes going into a wicked sounding lead break, and i never really hear a break in any of MP's songs! ive searched far and near, but i dont think a full recording exists

I take this song to be about Alternative Rock / Grunge music, and that musicians and lyricists of the time were only halfway to some true expression of music, and the later Seattle scene music ended up being false expressions of music and art, And in the end the Seattle scene protected the later false music, by claiming that it was true when only the early music had the true intent of the alternative rock message.
