Poppies Lyrics

Long long ago in China I'm told
To England was traded some tea
And so sealed the fate
In pieces of eight
All England and all of the world
Yeah...poppies

When soon his majesty sent
soldiers and thieves
To India searching for gold
Instead from the ground
Some magic they found
Something far better I'm told
Yeah...poppies
Yeah...poppies

And now this story told from
days of our own
When gossamer doggies ran ran
They'd patiently wait
With pieces of eight
So everybody could smile one
Yeah...poppies
Yeah...poppies

yeah really, someone likes his opium. is anyone else reminded of the presidents of the united states (the band, not the people) when they listen to this song? just a random, original, happy-tune type song with repetitive lyrics. great riffs and shows off the lead voice well.

yes i love that band i named my cat after their song Kitty. everyone thinks i couldnt come up with a name. but kitty played on my ipod and my kitten climbed up my leg, scratched me through my jean, and spent the night outside. I said your name, is Kitty. like the song by PUSA. i even have the CD =)

I wish somebody would do some research on this song...

It's basically how poppy seeds got to England. Poppy seeds make opium. Opium can be synthesized morphine. Morphine makes diacetylmorphine. You guessed it, that's heroin. But this doesn't really concern heroin. Opium and Poppies were two songs meant to be together. Not as one. But instead on the same album together.

I like this song, not only because it's really lighthearted, but it tells an extremely inane story about the British discovering Opium. And the UK was never the same since. :)

It's about the Opium Wars between England and China in the 19th century. England found opium in their colony India, but instead of getting their colonial subjects addicted, they tried to trade it to China. China didn't like it, and the Opium War started. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opium_wars

Exactly Zepher, but it was hardly a war... much more like a massacre. The Chinese didn't have a chance against the British navy. The British were just ticked off that they imported so many goods from China, but it of course couldn't export cuz no one wanted the western crap. Great Britain forced opium into the Chinese marketplace by firepower. And we wonder why they've been a little annoyed by us westerners.
