So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
Sometimes I feel so happy
Sometimes I feel so sad
Sometimes I feel so happy
But mostly you just make me mad
Baby, you just make me mad
Linger on your pale blue eyes
Linger on your pale blue eyes
Thought of you as my mountain top
Thought of you as my peak
A thought of you as everything
I've had, but couldn't keep
I've had, but couldn't keep
Linger on your pale blue eyes
Linger on your pale blue eyes
Skip a life completely
Stuff it in a cup
They said, money is like us in time
It lies, but can't stand up
Down for you is up
Linger on your pale blue eyes
Linger on your pale blue eyes
It was good what we did yesterday
And I'd do it once again
The fact that you are married
Only proves you're my best friend
But it's truly, truly a sin
Linger on your pale blue eyes
Linger on your pale blue eyes
If I could make the world as pure
And strange as what I see
I'd put you in a mirror
I'd put in front of me
I'd put in front of me
Linger on your pale blue eyes
Linger on your pale blue eyes
Linger on your pale blue eyes
Linger on your pale blue eyes
Linger on your pale blue eyes
Linger on your pale blue eyes
Linger on your pale blue eyes
Linger on your pale blue eyes
Linger on your pale blue eyes
Linger on your pale blue eyes
Linger on your pale blue eyes
Linger on your pale blue eyes
Linger on your pale blue eyes
Linger on your pale blue eyes
Sometimes I feel so sad
Sometimes I feel so happy
But mostly you just make me mad
Baby, you just make me mad
Linger on your pale blue eyes
Linger on your pale blue eyes
Thought of you as my mountain top
Thought of you as my peak
A thought of you as everything
I've had, but couldn't keep
I've had, but couldn't keep
Linger on your pale blue eyes
Linger on your pale blue eyes
Skip a life completely

It lies, but can't stand up
Down for you is up
Linger on your pale blue eyes
Linger on your pale blue eyes

Linger on your pale blue eyes
Linger on your pale blue eyes
Linger on your pale blue eyes
Linger on your pale blue eyes
Linger on your pale blue eyes
Linger on your pale blue eyes
Linger on your pale blue eyes
Linger on your pale blue eyes
Linger on your pale blue eyes
Linger on your pale blue eyes
Linger on your pale blue eyes
Linger on your pale blue eyes

I like how she reworked this song. Especially these lyrics: "The fact that you're insane Only proves that you're my best friend And I will never fuck anyone else again"
@Nimbie Exactly ! That's that lyrics change that made the song so powerful
its a VELVET UNDERGROUND cover.
is this song about kurt cobain?
no I'm pretty sure it's a cover of a velvet underground song..
yeah its a VU song, only she changed the words around somewhat, and screamed pale blue eyes and totally changed the guitar part. beautiful scream, she has. i think she sings it about kurt though
its a LOU REED cover :)
This song means a lot to me. It reminds me of someone who i used to love, and who used to love me. He had blue eyes...and everything Courtney sings about seems relevant. I have a relationship with someone else now and some of the lines still apply to me. I love it when you can relate to songs. I didn't know this was a cover but i love the words.
Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground both performed this song. :]
I didn't appreciate this cover and the distorted vocals until I sorta broke up with a guy I adore who has pale blue eyes. The way she screamed out "pale blue eyes" just was the perfect accompanient to my pain. and now I love this cover.
lou reed is the lead singer of velvet underground i believe. this is song is pretty good, best song on her ask for it cd which wasn't too good.
