And ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere
I've looked at clouds that way
The dizzy dancing way you feel
When every fairy tale comes real
I've looked at clouds that way
They rain and snow on everyone
So so many things I could've done
But clouds got in...
On acid stars you're getting there
My body is a temple
But I'm only going to give it to you
When you die
I've looked at life that way
You leave 'em laughing when you go
Don't, don't let them in
Don't, don't let them know
Don't give yourself away
They shake their heads, man,
They say I've changed, well,
Well something's wrong and rearranged
From living every, every...
From win and lose, and still somehow, it's,
It's life's illusions I recall, I,
I really don't know
I really don't know
I really don't know
I really don't know
I really don't know life at all
Count your stars, say goodnight

it's about dying. that's it.

Dudes, this is a Joni Mitchell song. that scared me. I heard the Mitchell version a while after the Hole version. And it really impressed me, cause it was a fuckin hippy song and they made it so good!
p.s. i do not know HOW i recognized it, but I did.
Yep, our super Christian deputy head got a guitar out one day during school assembly and sang it ! And i was like "why is she singing a Hole song that's so obviously about getting high ???" LOL

These lyrics are great. I always sing this song when I'm bored. Keep rockin' Courtney. <3

I think this song is about a person who uses drugs in order to run away from the problems in his life."Rows and flows of angel hair and ice cream castles in the air and feather canyons everywhere" sounds like somthing that a person on drugs will see."As every fairy tale comes real" is the desription of this person to his new life as somone who doesn't need to take care of things and responsibilities, like we would sometimes dream we could do.acid is a clue of using "LSD" weich is a powerful psychedelic drug."When you die i've looked at life that way":Somone important in this person lives died and that was a critical cause of the person starting using drugs oftenely in order to run away from reality."But now it's just another show you leave 'em laughing when you go":helping people stop using drugs gives to the people who are doing so very good image but sometimes those people only care about the image issue and are actually mocking this person behind his back for being a drug addict. "So so don't let them inside, don't let them know don't give yourself ohh away":You shouldn't let fake people be a major part of you life and you shouldn't share personal experiences with them,"let them know" about you. "But now my friends are acting strange, they shake their heads man they say I've changed well well something's lost rearranged from living every every every I've"-This person's friends start getting away from him because they are feeling his drug addiction changed him,but what they don't understand is that drugs are this person's way to run away from a painful change is his life, possibly the other person's death that has been mentioned before. "I've looked at clouds from both sides now, from up and down, and still somehow i'ts just illusions I recall":Looking "up" at clouds is being sober, like wer'e doing oftenely.I believe that "Looking down at clouds" is when a person is on drugs because the term of "high" is usually also being used to describe Tallness. "It's just illusions I recall" means that because of this person's often use of drugs(probably LSD like I said before) he can't seperate between illusions and actual memories. The last part of the song sounds somthing like a person "on trip" would think.

courtney love's mom used to make her sing the joni mitchell version on road trips and she hated it, so she made this cool jangly version.

I really love this song the way Courtney sings and the guitar riffs are just amazing yes i am a hippie :-D

the song is good, especially after you listen to pretty on the inside(song), the 2 songs are connected and it ends the cd so good.

Even though I grew up listening to grunge bands, I like the Joni Mitchell version, "Both Sides Now," a lot better. There's an incredible poetry in the song that really tugs at the heart. I think you have to have some years under you though to really appreciate it. I'm approaching thirty now, and I personally identify with the first few stanzas that speak to the passing of childhood and the loss of innocent wonder and naivete. I imagine the later sections of the song about love and life will resonate more when I'm older.

I love this rendition--it's a totally morbid, nihilistic spin on a classic folk song. Courtney clearly rewrote parts of the lyrics to give the song a darker edge than what Mitchell's lyrics imply.
Mitchell's original song always seemed to me to be more about reflection and coming to peace with the fact that you will never figure it all out—that life is a mystery, and you don't know it any better even after having lived it.
Hole's version is the same thematically speaking, but instead of treating it as a peaceful surrender, it's presenting it as an instance of resentment, chaos, and utter confusion. It's more about an experience of absolute terror at the moment of one's death. It's an extremely powerful cover. The stripped down chord progression and Courtney's pained vocals on it are chilling.
