weheyyy, first. anywho, i love this song, its a good slow one, i dont know why i like it, it just rocks. the lyrics are easy to relate to if you ask me, its basically about how he has been troubled by a girl, i think shes gone away, 'hello or is this goodbye' meaning she has come one last time, so is he supposed to say hello or his last goodbyes. then her smile he wants to know if he'l ever see it again so it can put his mind to rest.

i think you're right about everything, except, i think this song was written when his mom died. instead of talking about a girl, it's his mom

Billie Joes mom is not deadbut his father is. he died when billie was ten. This song's so good!!!

i personnally think its about him not seeing someone and wondering if tehy are alright and you can't go to sleep until you know they are safe
