No One Knows Lyrics
Why should my fun have to end?
For me it's only the beginning
I see my friends begin to age
A short countdown to their end
Call me irresponsible
Call me habitual
But when you think of me
Do you fill your head with schemes
Better think again
Cause no one knows
I don't want to cause no harm
But sometimes my actions hurt
Is there something I should find
To make plans for forever
Does it seem like all your memories fade
You soak up knowledge to fill the space
And still my answer remains...
I don't know. (No one knows)
For me it's only the beginning
I see my friends begin to age
A short countdown to their end
Call me habitual
But when you think of me
Do you fill your head with schemes
Better think again
Cause no one knows
But sometimes my actions hurt
Is there something I should find
To make plans for forever
Does it seem like all your memories fade
You soak up knowledge to fill the space
And still my answer remains...
I don't know. (No one knows)

I'm not shure of what this song is about, but what i'm shure of is that it is great... I think is kind of not wanting to grow up, but you "see your friends begin to age" and that just sucks, because you don't have as much fun with them anymore. the line of "I don't want to cause no harm, but sometimes my acctions hurt" is SO true! Like sometimes you do things with good intentions but they turn out wrong and you end up hurting somebody.
This has got to be one of my fave Green Day songs, to listen and play. I agree its about not wanting you or your friends to grow up. But also about being misunderstood. The chorus makes me think of a person who's dismissed as being all these things (irrisponsible, habitual) but really, they feel "no one knows" them. I can relate to that.
Wow! I'm the first one to comment on this one? Well, okay. I think Kerplunk is easily their best album (though Warning is a good contender, too) and this is one of my fav songs on it. I love Mike's bass arpeggios throughout it, they totally make the song. As for what it's about, I think it's about a guy who's trying to stay young and irresponsible as people around him are expecting him to grow up and move on. This is one of my favorites to cover.
This is such a chillin' song. I personally like the line "Does it seem like all your memories fade, You soak up knowledge to fill the space, And still my answer, remains...I don't know" which goes along with the theme of trying to stay young and irresponsible while others expect him to grow up. (like TaoAvatar20 said) This is one of the classics that many people overlook. What a shame. Great Song
I think it means its better to be carefree and fun than the people who are so conventional and "soak up knowlege to fill the space". Alsways remember the good times and its ok to be irrisponcible..screw what people say
Odd how at the age of 16/17 Billie Joe wrote more mature lyrics than a lot of the new pop-punk acts do at 26.
But as for the meaning, I agree with the growing up intepretation. This song is the high-school anthem, and a truly overlooked song. This song proves how amazing Green Day really are.
Also, has anyone else noticed that this seems to be the theme of a lot of songs on Kerplunk?
I love the bass line.

One of the things that is great about 1039 sosh and kerplunk is sort of what fuckyouall said. They wrote lyrics teenagers could relate to because they WERE teens, not fucking simple plan droning on about I'm Just A Kid when he's a damn adult. Good Charlotte are even worse. Damn, it's creepy when they pretend to be kids.
It makes me think of my ex-boyfriend. He was just like the person described in the song...
