Fool (if You Think It's Over) Lyrics

A dying flame, you're free again
Who could love and do that to you
All dressed in black, he won't be coming back
Save your tears, you've got years and years
The pains of seventeen's
Unreal they're only dreams
Save your crying for the day

Fool if you think it's over
'Cos you said goodbye
Fool if you think it's over
I'll tell you why
New born eyes always cry with pain
At the first look at the morning sun
You're a fool if you think it's over
It's just begun

Miss teenage dream, such a tragic scene
he knocked your crown and ran away
First wound of pride and how you cried and cried
But save your tears you've got years and years

Fool if you think it's over
'Cos you said goodbye
Fool if you think it's over
I'll tell you why
New born eyes always cry with pain
At the first look at the morning sun
You're a fool if you think it's over
It's just begun

I'll buy your first good wine
We'll have a real good time
Save your crying for the day
That may not come but anyone
Who had to pay would laugh at you and say

Fool if you think it's over
'Cos you said goodbye
Fool if you think it's over
I'll tell you why

An older brother comforting a broken-hearted 17-year-old sister

Humm, my take on this was that a young girl was broken hearted because of the death of her love. Hence... "all dressed in black, he's not coming back". The song was being sung to her by another interested man who, while trying to console her, is wanting to move the relationship forward.

being 17, falling in love with a 28 year old man and being separated by circumstances.

It's weird - Chris Rea's a pale Englishman but I thought this song was by a black blues/soul singer when I heard it. shrug

when I hear this song I am thinking about a guy consoling a girl he likes that just got dumped

Chris Rea wrote this song for his younger sister who had recently been heartbroken

That's nice that he wrote it for his sister. I had a slightly different idea on it... I thought this teen girl was sitting in a bar, after having been dumped by her boyfriend, in tears. This slightly older guy is offering to buy her a drink to cheer her up and telling her she's got years ahead of her to worry about love.

It seems very possibly that this was written for his little sister, but the song seems to be about perspective. Specifically the lack of it the first time your heart is broken.

The first time your heart is truely broken can be the most difficult one. Partially because it is a new experience and, I think, more so because that most of us go through this when we are still young and innocent and inexperienced and we tend to be totally committed to the relationship lasting forever. Which makes it all the more difficult when it just ends.

As we get older and more disillusioned, and our hearts have taken more and more pain and heartbreak, we tend to lower our expectations and prepare ourselves for the reality that each new opportunity also brings with it the possibility of another heart break.

Thus, the perspective of multiple relationships ending allows us to know that it is not the end of the world when one does. Despite how it may seem that first time.
