For me the lyrics could mean that after a breakup, if someone loves you, it has to come from them, freely, not forced (I cannot help in), and that we should always be willing to accept if the person wants to leave (I can help you out). When they leave, we hurt, and we hope one day the person will come back and things will be fine again...which seldom happens (we may never meet again).
