The Back Seat of My Car Lyrics
Speed along the highway, honey I want it my way
But listen to her daddy's song, don't stay out to long
Were just busy hidin', sitting the back seat of my car
The lazy lights are pretty, we end up in Mexico City
But listen to her daddy's song, makin' love is wrong
Were just busy ridin', sitting the back seat of my car
Oh we was only busy hidin', sitting the back seat of my car
And when we've finshed drivin' we can say we were late in arriving
and listen to her daddy's song, we believe that we can't be wrong
Ohhh we believe that we can't be wrong
Ohhh we believe that we can't be wrong
We can make it to Mexico City, sittin' in the backseat of my car
Ohhh we believe that we can't be wrong
Ohhh we believe that we can't be wrong
Ohhh we believe that we can't be wrong
Ohhh we believe that we can't be wrong

Wonderful song. The coda is among his best, other than maybe the end of "Rock Show."
Supposedly Paul wrote this as an "American" love song. Cars, back seats (drive-ins), going to mexico. Obviously a young couple in love, defiant of their parents wishes.
Also, the part at the end "We believe we can't be wrong", was supposed to be aimed at John Lennon. I don't believe that every song John or Paul wrote was about the other one, but this is time frame when John and Paul really were 'communicating' to each other thru songs (John's 'How Do You Sleep').
No, I don't think it was addressed to John. Yes it was released on Ram right during that time the two of them were talking through songs to each other. But you see Back Seat was an old song. Paul actually brought it to the Get Back /Let It Be sessions and there are recordings of the Beatles performing it. But since it never was released Paul eventually did it for Ram.

It's intriguing that in 71 Paul recorded and released an old song like that because John did too. Jealous Guy was written in 68 when they were in India, although the lyrics were more recent. Paul took months to get the lyrics for Yesterday; John took years for Jealous Guy. Oh well.
Amazing song! Perfectly put together, especially at the spot where he delivers that first "we believe that we can't be wrong." It's definitely an American-style love song...the lyrics and even the title caught me by surprise coming from Paul. A great idea and a great song.
The line "we believe that we can't be wrong" doesn't sound like it would be aimed at John, though. It's a response to the earlier line "making love is wrong." But they're in the back seat and believe that they can't be wrong.
Also, as far as communicating through songs...even John would later say that "How Do You Sleep" was more about himself than it was Paul. You can see this in the "so Sgt. Pepper took you by surprise?" line. Paul certainly wasn't surprised by Sgt. Pepper- it was his concept. No question that it was probably mostly written out of spite for Paul, though.
Agree on that. "We believe that we can't be wrong" makes more sense (and suits better) as part of the story than just an unrelated jab at Lennon.

A true pop gem.
Young love making in the back seat of the car. Simple, and brilliant
