i think this is talking about how he's torn. the relationship is faded n over, but he feels like there's some illusion that both of em see where the relationship still exists. He wants to be relieved from all the emotions she's sending through him cuz "it's strangling" him n he just wants her to go so he can move on too

this song is one of the greatest howie songs...i think that the song is talking about how he wanted to fall in love but just couldn't make it happen. now he feels torn between wanting to stay and needing to leave and move on
