White Cross Lyrics
[Thurston]
Burning inside
i cross myself it doesn't help me
cause i'm not smart enough
i'm digging into hot white
learning not to lie
we cross it out and stay away
burning inside
we cross it out and stay away
Burning inside
i cross myself it doesn't help me
cause i'm not smart enough
i'm digging into hot white
learning not to lie
we cross it out and stay away
we cross it out and stay away

I think it's about the disillusionment of religion, namely Christianity. Gets to the point: "I cross myself it doesn't help me" to "we cross it out and stay away". I guess it could be taken other ways, but it's one of the best on Sister.
erik is wrong white cross is a drug kind of like speed in pill form being a drug addict myself, i'm pretty sure that's what it is about
"White Cross" is also a painting by Marc Chagall.
I'll agree with the idea that it's about drug addiction, considering it was probably written around 1985 during one of Sonic Youth's darkest periods...
Maybe it really is about drugs, I don't know, but because of its religious imagery and the motif of disillusionment and/or devastation ("I cross myself, it doesn't help..." etc.) it seems to me that this song is somehow connected with "(I Got a) Catholic Block".
It might have something to do with religion. Both covers of this album feature either a cross or an inverted cross.
