I Dreamed I Dream Lyrics
Look before you leap, okay? You slept
Do you read me? Did I drift?
May all your dreams come true Do I dream?
He's standing by the door Do you read me?
He's got something in his hands I'm not speaking
All the money's gone Do you read me?
All the money's gone I dream
The days we spend, go on and on
Shift
Fucking youth I dream
Working youth
May all your dreams come true Sound today are you sound today are
you sound today?
A lot of people suffer Sound today are you sound today are
From impotence You sound today?
All the money's gone Today
The days we spend go on and on These things don't happen
automatically
Fucking youth I dream
Working youth Edith moves each step
Fucking youth The days we spent go on and on
Working youth I dream
Fucking youth Do you read me?

Yeah, its called "I Dreamed I Dream".
I see two possible meanings. Either way, its the plight of working class youth in dead end mindless monotonous jobs.
It could be about how the government takes more and more money through taxes and yet nothing positive is seen in return. "People suffer from impotence" == government officials.
It's also about being young and stuck in a rut, a dead end job (All the money's gone) which doesn't pay much but is the pinnacle of monotony(The days we spent go on and on). They suffer from impotence, they feel useless. They dream, but their dreams are also impotent.
all their songs are about sex
this song is actually called "i dreamed i dream". great song though.
this song has so much atmosphere and sadness i agree with rimiska about the who bad job making the hour go on and on i like the job i have now but this song totally reminds me of the old job i use to have yeah exploited youth
i think this song is incredible! it has that gorgeous, scratchy almost cold atmosphere to it, & the combination of kim's and lee's voices blew me away the first time i heard it. definitely about bored, unappreciated, insubordinate youth. love it.
@meg; or, in fact: Subordinate

update: from the recent sonic youth biography i found out that this song's lyrics are made up of excerpts from lee's journal & lyrics randomly picked out from a magazine (sung by kim), chosen at the last minute. so i'm not sure anymore whether is supposed to be any underlying meaning or deep connection, except maybe kim's fascination with popular culture and what the vox populi seems to think are important issues (wealth, sex - impotence, etc). also, lee's first line i think is the faint "edith moves with each step", not "i sleep".
@meg; Therefore it is not about anything in particular intended BY the band, but it can be interpreted as being about something which the audience identifies, like a huge Rorschach inkblot sheet.

@meg; This is how I assume Dylan wrote his early works; not random, lifted pages, but edited 'stream-of-consciousness

This album was quite 'normal' for the Youth's first outing
