Death Valley '69 Lyrics

[Thurston & Lydia Lunch]

Groooooahhh!

Coming down
Sadie, i love it
now now now
death valley '69

you're right
you're right
you're right
you're right
you're right you were right
i was on the wrong track
we're deep in the valley
how deep in the gulley
and now in the canyon
and now in the canyon
out in the yonder way out in the yonder
she started to holler
she started to holler
i didn't wanna
i didn't wanna
i didn't wanna
i didn't wanna
but she started to holler
so i had to hit it
hit it
hit it
hit it
deep in the valley
in the trunk of an old car
in the back of a chevvy
i got sand in my mouth you got sand in your mouth
and you got sun in your eyes i got sun in your eyes
blind blinded
and you wanted to get there
but i couldn't go faster i wanted to get there
but you couldn't go faster
so i started to hit it you couldn't go faster
so i started to hit it
i started to hit it hit it
hit it
hit it
hit it
hit it
hit it
hit it
hit it
hit it

coming down
Sadie, i love it
now now now
death valley '69
death valley '69
death valley '69
death valley '69
ieieieioooooaoaoaieeih!

I can't say for sure what it's about specifically. But I can tell you that there is a major reference to Charles Manson. The manson family resided in the desert of Death Valley in 1969, and of the the girls used the alias Sadie Mae Gultz. Sadie was involved in the tate/la bianca murders and at one point confessed. She was in love with Charles.

Also, this may be streaching it, but Manson was into Dune buggies. this could acount for all of the references to cars, and going fast.

Manson? Sex? Drugs? Death Valley? '69? Yes, folks, that's what it's about.

BTW, Lydia Lunch is one of the most important women in underground rock, art, and all around social deviance from the early 80's.

AMEN!

Personally, lydia spoils this song. I think its an ode to the dryest place in the world.

This song's really great, really menacing. I think Thurston may be singing from the point of view of Charles Manson and Lydia maybe one of his victims?

who's lydia lunch?

i just got Bad Moon Rising, it's a great album, and i love this song.

i dont think Lydia's taking the point of view of the victims, cus she says the same sort of things as Thurston, but i do think that Thurstons from the point of view of Manson, cus he says that when, 'she started to holler', he had to hit it.... i don't know...im confused.

Well, that song isnt exactly on "ode" to Charles Manson, its rather an ironic point of view on the whole thing. I dunno who that Lydia Lunch is, but she sounds like a 10 year old trying to scream. But thats what gives the song a lot of its creepy atmosphere.
