The Last Worthless Evening Lyrics

I know you broke up with him
And your heart's still on the shelf
It's been over two years for me
And I'm still not quite myself
You can't be with someone new
And you can't go back to him
You're beginning to realize
That it's sink or swim
I see you around sometimes
And my heart just melts
You're lookin' like if you had your wish
You'd be somewhere else
And it just breaks my heart
To see you here this way
Someday I'll get the nerve
To walk up to you and say
This is the last worthless evening
That you'll have to spend
Just gimme a chance
To show you how to love again
This is the last worthless evening
That you'll have to spend
'Cause I'll be there
When your broken heart is on the mend
Every night it's the same old crowd
in smoky rooms
You catch a faint glimpse of love sometimes
But it never blooms
I've been around this block a time or two
And I've made some big mistakes
But girl I promise you, I promise you
That this is the worthless evening
That you'll have to spend
Just gimme a chance
To show you how to love again
This is the last worthless evening
That you'll have to spend
'Cause it won't be long
'Till your little heart is on the mend
People inside their houses
with the shades pulled down
God knows, we could use some romance
In this sleepy bedroom town
I know you're still afraid to rush into anything
But there're just so many summers
And just so many springs
And this is the last worthless evening
That you'll have to spend
Just gimme a chance to show you how
to love again
This is the last worthless evening
That you'll have to spend, baby
'Cause I'll be there when your broken heart
is on the mend
This is the last worthless evening
That you'll have to spend
Just gimme a chance, gimme a chance
To show you how to love again
This is the last worthless evening
That you'll have to spend 'cause it won't be long
'Til your little heart is on the mend

The best part of the song is "Every night it's the same old crowd in smoky rooms You catch a faint glimpse of love sometimes But it never blooms"

This is so true. You break up with someone and you go out to the bars to meet someone. But it just is worthless and can't compare to what you lost.

This song's pretty straightforward... girlfriend and boyfriend break up, two years later the boyfriend is still in love with her and just wants one last chance with her.

But there're just so many summers And just so many springs --Life and youth are short, take them while they last.

I wish that someone would sing this song to me. It's so effin' pretty and meaningful, straightforward. Yar.

The first time I heard this song, I thought it was about a boy, long in love with this girl, who just wanted to give her one "worthless evening" to be with him, a boy she never loved like her ex-boyfriend. In other words, the boy's dream comes true for a single night, and she gets to feel loved again, for a single night, before moving on to someone else. A single night can make all the difference in these people's lives.

Acey_Dearest's interpretation is probably more accurate, but there's a reason why it's called an "interpretation." My interpretation, by definition rooted in my own experiences, is going to be the basis for a pivotal scene in a story I'll be writing. Music provides such great inspiration for writers like us - especially beautiful pieces like this song.

Great song. It's not the man that knows how to love, It's the child inside the man. This guy is in love with this girl and he wants to show her what love is. She's a woman that's been trying to fall in love with the wrong men, but this poor underdog really loves her, and she has no idea. He's been loving her from a distance for two years. poor guy

Acey I respectfully disagree. Chick breaks up with her boyfriend. She's afraid or hesitant to be with someone again. The dude is still bent out of shape from his last relationship. He's seen this chick around. Dude doesn't know her. Maybe he knows her? Thats open to interpretation. He knows her deal. He thinks he can give her what she needs and feel love again. Now's his chance. He needs to do it before it's too late for him. Solid, good love song.

It is about the importance of the timing of one's heart. You can meet the right person at the wrong time and you can meet the wrong person at the right time. Wait too long and over-think it/over protect it...and you loose youth and opportunity to be with the right person. Jump in to feel less pain...and you can hurt to the point of long term damage and miss out as well - become damaged. Life is all about balance and timing but emotions make it all so damn hard.

I have always heard that it's about Don Henley seeing Michelle Pfeiffer at a party after she broke up with Peter Horton, and Henley trying to hit on her, with no good result. He told the story when he played the song live, although he didn't mention Pfeiffer by name -- people figured it out from context clues.
