I Know You Rider Lyrics

I know you, rider, gonna miss me when I'm gone;
I know you, rider, gonna miss me when I'm gone;
Gonna miss your baby, from rolling in your arms.
Laid down last night, Lord, I could not take my rest;
Laid down last night, Lord, I could not take my rest;
My mind was wandering like the wild geese in the West.
The Sun will shine in my back door someday.
The Sun will shine in my back door someday.
March winds will blow all my troubles away.
I wish I was a headlight, on a North bound train;
I wish I was a headlight, on a North bound train;
I'd shine my light through cool Colorado rain.
I know you, rider, gonna miss me when I'm gone;
I know you, rider, gonna miss me when I'm gone;
Gonna miss your baby, from rolling in your arms.

Cover art for I Know You Rider lyrics by Grateful Dead

This is a traditional blues tune. Dead covered and jammed it well. This is one of the many songs with traditional railroad references/imagery in ti. Take fro mthis song what you will--personally, I feel this song is a tale of transition, a tale of one man's progression through life. I think that ithis person realizes that to grow in life, he has to leave things behind that may be conforting at the time, but in the end, are no good for him . Wishing to be a headlight on a northbound trail is the desire to lead somone or somthing to better things. Depending on how the jam goes, this song can take on different feelings/attitudes. Great interpretation.
