Eyes Of The World Lyrics

Right outside this lazy summer home
You ain't got time to call your soul a critic, no
Right outside the lazy gate of winter's summer home
Wonderin' where the nut-thatch winters
Wings a mile long just carried the bird away

Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world
The heart has its beaches, its homeland and thoughts of its own
Wake now, discover that you are the song that the morning brings
But the heart has its seasons, its evenings, and songs of its own

There comes a redeemer, and he slowly too fades away
There follows his wagon behind him that's loaded with clay
And the seeds that were silent all burst into bloom and decay
And night comes so quiet, it's close on the heels of the day.

Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world
The heart has its beaches, its homeland and thoughts of its own
Wake now, discover that you are the song that the morning brings
But the heart has its seasons, its evenings, and songs of its own

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own
Sometimes we visit your country and live in your home
Sometimes we ride on your horses, sometimes we walk alone
Sometimes the songs that we hear are just songs of our own

Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world
The heart has its beaches, its homeland and thoughts of its own
Wake now, discover that you are the song that the morning brings
But the heart has its seasons, its evenings, and songs of its own

It is almost impossible to really understand the real meaning behind any grateful dead song... but i think if you really think about them you can uncover wise and profound thoughts in their lyrics.... what i thought was trying to be said was that you are everything that is beautiful in the world... when he is talking about the heart having season i think it means a persons emotions changing

I have always described the way Robert Hunter's writing as subtly evocative.. he can bring up a feeling, of a time or a place or an idea better than anyone I know. The fact that he and Jerry found each other and we lived to know it, is such a gift.

I feel a lot like you do about this song..and if you have any hope that the world can be a more beautiful or loving place it has to start withi, you have to love yourself first to see the beauty and love one another.

This song is just full of beautiful imagery - i love the chords they use, it's so invocative of summer and lots and lots of open space and beaches and the sea.......

I agree with you sexwax, i don't know of any real meaning to the song as a whole but rather each line is a different idea.

I particularly like "there comes a redeemer but he slowly too fades away". It's possibly talking about prophets such as Jesus. Although Jesus was great and all his messages were for a different time so eventually you need new messages, more applicable to your time and place.

The song that turned me into a Deadhead. It is beautiful and mind-altering in itself. I think the song talks about how you need to live in your own world and do what you think will make a difference in you. Can't get enough of this song.

The truth is right THERE in the lyrics...

THERE COMES A REDEEMER, THEN HE SLOWLY TOO FADES AWAY, THERE FOLLOWS A WAGON BEHIND HIM THATS LOADED WITH CLAY

we shall all shape and make our own meaning for this song, reflected in whatever circumstance we may find ourselves in.

We are the eyes of the world, and we shall see in life, like in this song, whatever we are focused on IN ourselves...

YOU ARE THE SONG THAT THE MORNING BRINGS!!!

I've always interpreted as the famous Alan Watts quote goes, "You are the universe experiencing itself." I remember when i truly got this. REALLY got it. I felt it in the sky and the wind of my breath.....and it rained.

My Interpretation
Cover art for Eyes Of The World lyrics by Grateful Dead

I interpret the eyes of the world part to be about how we as humans are a part of the earth just like trees. WE ARE NATURE. So we are the world, and since we are conscious and have eyes. We can "see" for the world, because really since we are the world, the world sees through us.

Yep. And reminders, such as this, help. Other helps are conscious breathing, meditation, etc. What we think, we create for our experience.

My eyes see the vast possibilities that the world provides for us, from being the redeemer to the clay that is shaped by our life experiences. The redeemer may also be parents who hope to shape us as clay but our own eyes may set our sights on what our heart tells us is truly our song.
