Blood and Fire Lyrics

I have spent nights with matches and knives
Leaning over ledges only two flights up
Cutting my heart, burning my soul
Nothing left to hold
Nothing left but blood and fire

You have spent nights thinking of me
Missing my arms but you needed to leave
Leaving my cuts, leaving my burns
Hoping I'd learn

But blood and fire
Are too much for these restless arms to hold
And my nights of desire they're calling me
Back to your fold
And I am calling you, calling you
From 10,000 miles away
Won't you whet my fire with your love
Babe

I am looking for someone who can take as much as I give
And give back as much as I need
You know and they still have the will to live ah no
'cause I am intense, I am in need
I am in pain, I am in love
And I feel forsaken you know
Like the things I gave away

And blood and fire
Are too much for these restless arms to hold
And my nights of desire they're calling me
Back to your fold
And I am calling you, calling you
From 10,000 miles away
Won't you whet my fire with your love
Babe, babe, babe

I am intense, I am in need, I am in pain, I am in love
You know I am intense, I am in need, I am in pain, I am in love
I am intense, I am in need, I am in pain, I am in love
And blood and fire
Are too much for these restless arms to hold
And my nights of desire they're calling me
Back to your fold
And I am calling you, calling you
From 10,000 miles away
Won't you whet my fire with your love
Babe
Won't you whet my fire with your love
Babe now
Whet my fire with your love

This song is way way intense. I heard that Amy never plays it live - is that true? It sounds like a page out of a diary of someone with severe depression .

I am not sure about "never playing it live," but I do remember at one of the shows I went to, people were shouting out requests for this song. Amy refused to play it, and in fact said that this was the "No Blood and Fire Tour!"

Amy won't play the song live anymore. I guess she's past the Blood and Fire stage of her life. If you saw any of their shows in the early 90's or saw Live At The Uptown Lounge, she used to perform it live. And she'd act like she was dying up there or something.

amy ray quote from 2/27/1999: over at amy's, footnotes:

"it's a love song. it's about a relationship that was important to me in a self-destructive way. it took a long time to write it, a couple of years to get through it. it expresses a kind of love that a lot of people feel at one time in their lives. it's the obsessive compulsive love, which is very, very dangerous."

If I knew Amy as a friend, I would urge her not to perform Blood and Fire.

The song talks about self harm. In the recording and videos, it's like Amy is reliving something painful.

She commented "it would be dishonest" to perform it now. I guess that means "acting" something that was so real for her. And that this intense, beautiful song may romanticize self-destructive actions.
