The Road To Hell (part 2) Lyrics

Well I'm standing by the river
But the water doesn't flow
It boils with every poison you can think of
And I'm underneath the streetlight
But the light of joy I know
Scared beyond belief way down in the shadows
And the perverted fear of violence
Chokes the smile on every face
And common sense is ringing out the bell
This ain't no technological breakdown
Oh no, this is the road to hell

And all the roads jam up with credit
And there's nothing you can do
It's all just pieces of paper flying away from you
Oh look out world, take a good look
What comes down here
You must learn this lesson fast and learn it well
This ain't no upwardly mobile freeway
Oh no, this is the road
Said this is the road
This is the road to hell

this song has nothing at all to do with the M25 motorway in London, its a typical metaphore its all in the translation and when translated correctly-this is what the song is about.....

its basically a song telling you that the life your trapped in is the road to hell an you cant get out, ie marriage, morgage, commitment an how you will never be able to be free once you comite to these things that soceity tells you as a teen that this is how you should live your life, only the wise dont fall into this.. standing by the river But the water doesn't flow---waiting for your dreams but they just wont come-you are not your own man

It boils with every poison you can think of---the negativity an yr life that you choose which holds you down an the reallity of your decesions

And I'm underneath the streetlight But the light of joy I know Scared beyond belief way down in the shadows--

the brainwash an the fear the media an soceity puts into you, the reason why you wont risk anything or do or change anything you do

Chokes the smile on every face--as above your bound to the machine

the road to hell, the western soceity-where people think they are free but seriously they are bound

And all the roads jam up with credit And there's nothing you can do---morgage debt hire purchase all the things that married couples do an conform as society tells them to,

It's all just pieces of paper flying away from you----your stuffed an are like this its out of yr reach the debts morgages car repayments so on an so on, your now a part of the western way of life the machine.

You must learn this lesson fast and learn it well

if yr wise at a young age you will not get married or fall into debt just to have the happy couple sydrome you will never buy an travel an be yuour own man.-

This ain't no upwardly mobile freeway---once your bound your bound !!!!!! an this is the road to hell,

pink floyd wrote a simalar song called welcome to the machine

Showstopper!! Well done Kronos!! It has been 8 months since you posted that, and nobody could say a thing, it is a perfect analysis.

Not to dispute what you said, but it is just interesting that AFTER Chris Rea wrote these lyrics, the world fell into a credit crisis {"And all the roads jam up with credit And there's nothing you can do"}... but I guess he wasn't referring to that. :)

It is the sign of great lyrics when they are not specific but can apply to anyone's life, or all our lives. Stairway to Heaven is like that......

haha hell yea its a good translation i reckon, first time ive read it since i wrote that, 2 years ago

i signed up to song meanings after reading your idea on the meaning of this song .......i feel it needs pointing out that the song lyrics ARE specific to the m25

chris rea has allway said the lyrics were written while he was stuck in a traffic jam on the m25 so for you to say that the song has nothing to do with the m25 is just plain wrong

And I'm underneath the streetlight But the light of joy I know Scared beyond belief way down in the shadows

hes under the street light on the m25 and the...

I think this song is about the disastrous results of progress & the corners developed countries have painted themselves into due to industrialization& urbanization. It is the road to he'll that will take citizens to deterioration in quality of life and a mechanical, lackluster life of struggle just to stay afloat financially. A warning is given to the rest of the world to take heed & not follow suit

His greatest song. Instant classic.

Apparently about the M25 motorway (London's Orbital Motorway), which is renowned for being more like a car park.

To me, this seems to be about debt... mostly based on the lyrics of the second verse
