Boys In The Barroom Lyrics
Does God look down on the boys in the barroom,
Mainly forsaken but surely not judged.
Jacks, kings, and aces, their faces in wine,
Do lord deliver our kind.
From singing for whiskey three strings on the fiddle,
Four on the guitar and a song that I love.
Many's the night we spent picking and singing,
In hopes it be pleasing both here and above.
Jack's string fiddle to my sawtooth bow,
Who loves lonlieness loves it alone.
I love the dim lights like some love the dew,
Only thing I wonder sometimes:
Does God look down on the boys in the barroom,
Mainly forsaken but surely not judged.
Jacks, kings, and aces, their faces in wine,
Do lord deliver our kind.
Mainly forsaken but surely not judged.
Jacks, kings, and aces, their faces in wine,
Do lord deliver our kind.

When I saw Robert Hunter close his set with this song, he put his guitar down and sang the whole thing accapella. It was amazing, a perfect Ode to Deadheads. It was like a prayer of intercession, asking God to bless the concert ("in hopes it be pleasing both here and above") and to forgive the audience for its sins ("Do lord deliver our kind"). A perfect closer to set the stage for a fantastic Dead show to follow.
What a great tune! Hunter , as usual, mixes up old sea chantey's, english folk, and barroom jigs here.....and the age old question: was Jesus a wine- drinker and partier or a sober, straight mystic?? As for the jacks, kings, aces, Hunter is an avid fan of the old- western idiom, having grown up all along the west coast. Many of his songs are about card games, and fate.
