Bird Song Lyrics
All I know is something like a bird within her sang,
All I know she sang a little while and then flew off,
Tell me all that you know, I'll show you snow and rain.
If you hear that same sweet song again, will you know why?
Anyone who sings a tune so sweet is passin' by,
Laugh in the sunshine, sing, cry in the dark, fly through the night.
Don't cry now, don't you cry, don't you cry anymore. (La da da)
Sleep in the stars, don't you cry, dry your eyes on the wind.
All I know is something like a bird within her sang,
All I know she sang a little while and then flew off,
Tell me all that you know, I'll show you snow and rain.
All I know she sang a little while and then flew off,
Tell me all that you know, I'll show you snow and rain.
If you hear that same sweet song again, will you know why?

Don't cry now, don't you cry, don't you cry anymore. (La da da)

This song was written as a sort of trbute to Janis Joplin a short time after her death.
Jerry Garcia does a wonderful job singing this song, although he didn't write it, you can tell he has an emotional attactment to the song when he sings it.
If you hear that same sweet song again, will you know why? Anyone who sings a tune so sweet is passin' by,
I love this two lines. It's something I think many of us can relate to very strongly: people enter our lives, make us so happy but then have to leave.
This is easily one of my all-time Dead faves. So simple yet it provokes such feelings of joy and sorrow.People come and go, but what they shared was so profound.
In the film festival express,a documentary of a bucnh cof musicians riding a train across Canad and putting on concerts at various stops ,a sort of rolling music fest In one scene Garcia tells Janis he's always been in love with her.
A very sweet and fitting tribute to a troubled soul... Janis Joplin
Jerry sang a little while and than flew off...

I love the sentiment of the song. Its similar to an early medieval view of life: a bird that flies in the darkness and is unknown until it flies into a candle lit room, is seen, then quickly flies out the window and can be seen no more.
Originally a tribute to Janis Joplin. When performing recently, Phil Lesh and Bob Weir have substituted him/he for her/she - turning it into a tribute to Jerry Garcia:
All I know is something like a bird within him sang, All I know he sang a little while and then flew on, Tell me all that you know, I'll show you snow and rain
