Answering Machine Lyrics

I met a new one and she looks just like you
She gives me everything that you didn’t want to
And maybe, maybe I don’t need saving after all
She sticks in my ribs almost better than you did
And maybe I’m tired or maybe she glows

I wonder if you’re still defending
I wonder if you’re still defending

Cause you’ve been so wrong
So long now
You’ve been so wrong
For so long now

Met someone with your eyes and skin
I can convince her of everything
And baby, it’s so delicious you should
Come here and see for yourself
“I’m gone,” you said, “if this is all there is…
You’ll never shine alone”

And I wonder if you’re still defending
I wonder if you’re still defending

You’ve been so wrong (I could fall alone if all)
So long now (if I could fall away)
You’ve been so wrong (I could fall alone if all)
so long now(If I could fall away)

And you knew anthems to breathe
And I’ve got you on my answering machine.
I’ve kissed others lips
And they promised me healing
It’s easy if you try

It seems like everyone so far is really close to hitting the nail on the head. But I think he really is over her. Sure he wants to rub it in his ex's face... but that's because she was wrong about him. "So wrong for so long now."

In her message that he has kept on his machine, she told him "I'm gone if this is all there is. You'll never shine alone." As in, "You aren't good enough. You'll never find someone like me. And you can't make it without me." And now that he is over her, that message is humorous to him. It used to serve as motivation, now it serves as comic relief.

He found it VERY easy to get over her. He is kinda surprised at how easy it was. He found someone just as good looking, someone that is just as addicting(well almost), someone with beautiful eyes, someone with soft skin... someone great. And he is happy his ex set him free. Free from her harping and her 'better than you' attitdue. Free from her emotional baggage.("I wonder if you're still defending.")

On the whole, he is telling her "Hey look. I do just fine without you. You were wrong about me. But I bet YOU're still having problems."

Yeah, he hasn't moved on. He's faking it. He still has her on his answering machine, for God's sake. He said he kissed other lips with the hopes that it would help him get over his ex, but that obviously wasn't the case.

It's kinda' like John Waite's "Missing You" in that he's basically lying to himself when Waite says, "I ain't missing you at all."

I think it's about moving on, or at least trying to. Love this song!!!

i think the song is more about trying to convince himself and his ex that he has moved on, and then rubbin git in his ex's face. just a thought.

Yeah, he's still in the "i want to make you jealous" phase of the breakup. but he's still keeping his ex on his answering machine, he can't quite delete her yet.

I saw him in concert and he said when he moved out to California he plugged in the answering machine he had and there was a message from his ex and the song is about all of the feelings that came to him while he was listening to the message. Love the song

I think it's actually the opposite of what GoDeeper said, though I think his or her analysis was quite good.

I think he is being stubborn, but the fact that he's singing the song, the fact that he wants her to see how great he is, the fact that his new girlfriend is just like his ex all belies that he is not really over her at all.

I definitely think he's in the "rub it in your face stage". He's trying to move on but still really feels for the ex.

I met a new one and she looks just like you She gives me everything that you didn't want to And maybe I don't need saving after all She sticks in my ribs almost better than you did And maybe I'm tired or maybe she glows

He even found someone that looks like his ex. The problem was he loved her but she didn't treat him right, but somehow he still feels like she would be better for him because his new girl sticks ALMOST better.
