Fly Into The Sun Lyrics
I would not run from the holocaust
I would not run from the bomb
I'd welcome the chance to meet my maker
And fly into the sun, fly into the sun, fly into the sun
I'd break up into million pieces and fly into the sun
I would not run from the blazing light
I would not run from its rain
I'd see it as an end to misery
As an end to worldly pain
An end to worldly pain ...
I'd shine by the light of the unknown moment
To end this worldly pain
Fly into the sun, fly into the sun
I'd shine by the light of the unknown moment
And fly into the sun
The earth is weeping, the sky is shaking
The stars split to their core
And every proton and unnamed neutron
is fusing in my bones
And an unnamed mammal is darkly rising
As man burns from his tomb
And I look at this as a blissful moment
To fly into the sun
Fly into the sun, fly into the sun
I'd burn up into a million pieces
And fly into the sun
To end this mystery answer my mystery
I'd look at this as a wondrous moment
To end this mystery
Fly into the sun, fly into the sun
I'd break up into a million pieces
And fly into the sun
I would not run from the bomb
I'd welcome the chance to meet my maker
And fly into the sun, fly into the sun, fly into the sun

OK so the repeated, morbid message is that he is happy to die and he'd "welcome the chance to meet my maker" ect. ect. But why? Why are the lyrics about being so keen to die?? There doesn't seem to be a reason. Is he just sick of life? Was he dumped by another eccentric, transvestite, junkie? Or is it just meaingless words... Probably the latter. (By the way, I really enloy listening to this song and this whole album)
It's pretty obvious that he's referring to some form of nuclear warfare that would eliminate the human race and thus be "an end to wordly pain"

I think this song is about transcendence, not necessarily from this life to a higher plane, but maybe just from a tough situation to being happy again.
The song has a positive melody and an upbeat feel and the things Lou talks about escaping are all pretty negative, misery, worldly pain, the earth weeping and man burning in his tomb, and make me think that he's saying that if you're gonna carry on in a painful existence, what's wrong with facing one last hardship if it can potentially offer salvation?
This has always been one of my favorite albums and what better than to go directly to the source to understand this song's meaning?
“I wrote that because I saw that TV thing, The Day After [a film about the US being on the brink of nuclear war in the mid-80s – Ed]. And for some reason this thing went off in my head of another way of looking at it. What an amazing opportunity. You’re not committing the sin of suicide. There’s no escape anyway. Here’s this amazing chance to find out the answer to questions that have been driving people nuts for years. Here it is. And since you can’t run from it, you might as well fly right into it.” Lou Reed
