Staring at my picture book
She looks like Mary, Queen of Scots
She seemed very regal to me
Just goes to show how wrong you can be
I'm gonna stop wastin' my time
Somebody else would have broken both of her arms
Sad song, Sad song, Sad song, Sad song
My castle, kids and home
I thought she was Mary, Queen of Scots
I tried so very hard
Shows just how wrong you can be
I'm gonna stop wasting time
Somebody else would have broken both of her arms
Sad song, Sad song, Sad song, Sad song
She looks like Mary, Queen of Scots
She seemed very regal to me
Just goes to show how wrong you can be
Somebody else would have broken both of her arms
I thought she was Mary, Queen of Scots
I tried so very hard
Shows just how wrong you can be
Somebody else would have broken both of her arms

Isn't it interesting that an album as sobering as Berlin would end with the voice of the abusive husband who contributed to the abandonment of children and the suicide of his own wife? He has no qualms about it either ("Someone else would have broke both her arms.") and the half-enthusiastic chant of "sad song" only add to this effect. We can't mourn this situation anymore than he can; we are forced to say, "Oh, this is sad, let's move on." It's a stream of half hearted emotion that beautifully concludes this record. Lou gives voice to those forgotten.
i enjoy this song a lot. especially the flute. i'd say it's about someone who has realized that this woman is not worth "wasting his time". but as he looks back, he thinks about how real everything seemed to him and how hopeful he was of her.
and thats the depressing part.
but i'd say, even though the album is considered one of the most depressing, it ends with this song that sorta leaves you with a glimmer of hope..
I agree with def on this. He saying he thought she was a Queen, and treated her like a Queen. An she wasn't worth it. She wasn't as regal and royal as she let on. I think with the line about breaking both her arms he is saying someone else would not have been as nice as he was. He still cares even after how bad she was to him, but now he is done. He is tired of wasting his time thinking of her and what could have been. This was also a velvet underground song, and the lyrics...

i don't think it's hopeful at all. the male character hasn't learned anything from what's happened. he isn't repentent about what he's done. he still thinks he's in the right. he's just going to shrug it off and do the same to some other girl.
