The Bed Lyrics

This is the place where she lay her head
When she went to bed at night
And this is the place our children were conceived
Candles lit the room brightly at night

And this is the place where she cut her wrists
That odd and fateful night
And I said, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, what a feeling
And I said, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, what a feeling

This is the place where we used to live
I paid for it with love and blood
And these are the boxes that she kept on the shelf
Filled with her poetry and stuff

And this is the room where she took the razor
And cut her wrists that strange and fateful night
And I said, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, what a feeling
And I said, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, what a feeling

I never would have started if I'd known
That it's end this way
But funny thing, I'm not at all sad
That it stopped this way

This is the place where she lay her head
When she went to bed at night
And this is the place our children were conceived
Candles lit the room brightly at night

And this is the place where she cut her wrists
That odd and fateful night
And I said, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, what a feeling
And I said, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, what a feeling

Cover art for The Bed lyrics by Lou Reed

In my opinion, this is one of the most haunting and beautiful songs ever written. This is aftermath of the climax--an act of desperation after all is lost. It fits gorgeously between "The Kids" and segues well into the stunning, emotional dirge that is "Sad Song." The choir at the end only adds to the effect; it's a soulful conclusion to a powerful work.

I can't believe no one has commented on this song. What an amazing song. Sends chills down my spine.

Lou sounds so sad when he sings it. I always picture a loft apartment like in the crow movie....

Mesmerizing song. The speaker's wife killed herself and he's relieved. Sounds like her ghost at the end.

A powerful, understated track of emptiness & despair to complement Stephanie says. Typifies Berlin's misunderstood greatness, has genuine feeling and will haunt anyone with a heart.
