Cars Pass in Cold Blood Lyrics

There's a fire in the road where a frame is burnt
And other automobiles are slowing down around the fire
Lanes are backed up and people get all anxious inside
They've got a schedule to keep and don't want life to slip by

The siren and cube are coming up from behind
1981 stereo is drowned from the sound
I see a car with an urge and a driver to control it
He's carried away because what he does is more important

Cars pass in cold blood
I hold back, it's hard to
Because I really want to block
But realize it's a bad time for that

I try to stay calm and watch the ambulance pass
But as the car with the schedule pulled out of their lane
I had a terrible urge, but no driver to control it
Don't get carried away, what he does is not important

I think that this song is obviously about an accident where the car is on the side of the road and in flames. The writer sees the ambulance approaching so he tries to pull over to let the ambulance pass, but the person in the car behind him is actually trying to pass him and not at all concerned about the ambulance or the car, or cars, in the accident. Just involved in his own life and wanting to get where he wants to go.

I cant tell if the automobiles are slowing down because the burnt car is actually in the road, or if they are only stopping to watch the fire. Either way, the burnt car is the reason for the traffic back up.

I also love the lines, "I see a car with an urge and a driver to control it. He's carried away because what he does is more important" and "I had a terrible urge, but no driver to control it. Don't get carried away, what he does is not important."

He first judges the car behind him for not controlling his urge to pass the other cars because he feels that he is special and has more important things to do than everyone else in front of him. Then the writer expresses that same urge to cut him off to prevent him from getting to where he wants to go, but then calms himself and reminds himself that what the guy in the car behind him does isn't as important in the "grand scheme of things," and it isn't worth risking cutting him off so they both end up blocking the ambulance. The ambulance that is in fact the most important car on the road at that moment hands down.

Perhaps one of the most disturbing and uncomfortable moments in my life is when my mother pulled up next to a crash site where three 15 year olds were lying dead on the side of the road. The scene itself wasn't as disturbing as my mother's seeming impassiveness at their death, and her misplaced interest in the site.

I understood "...I really want a blackberry..." at the first listen instead of "...because i really want to block but realize..." ... oh well.

ah! christa, you should add what the chanting dudes say... i think they might be "counsin cause the blocking" and "nill service requesting" although those don't make much sense. great song, by the way.

its about how people are so careless driving in their cars. theyre more worried about their own schedules than the fact that people are dieing. "cars pass in cold blood" ...cold blood meaning indifference.

yeahh i'd really like to know what the guys are chanting in the background

Cover art for Cars Pass in Cold Blood lyrics by Faint, The

i think its less about how careless people are in their cars and a bit more about the fact they slow down to look at the accident but i guess its too much to ask that they stop and help

i want to say that the chanting is "passing cars (get blocking?) help! service requested!" i'm certain about the "help, service requested", but i'm not sure about what they say after "passing cars", mostly because i'm not sure what "get blocking" means.... also-- it seems like the point of view is not in a passing car, maybe a pedestrian or someone involved in the accident? and if he's involved, maybe he's pissed that no one is helping, and is shouting "help! service requested!"
