85 Lyrics
I'm just of real sad folk
And '85 was our best year
And she says it gets much worse
Before it gets any better
So I take it with a grain of salt
For the other means I wonder
Why it doesn't keep her up at night
Like it does me
We talk the way you do
And I have a sweet or two
For my only plus you say
They're getting bigger every day
So I take it with a grain of salt
For the other means I wonder
Why it doesn't keep him up at night
Like it does me
I'll be in your car
I locked the keys in your car
I'll be in your car
For now
"You want to fool around?" I ask
I get a sour reply
From the other wheel that always
Rises to the occasion
So I take it with a grain of salt
For the other means I wonder
Why it doesn't keep you up at night
I'll be in your car
I locked the keys in your car
I'll be in your car
For now
I've been a mess for some time
Now I get what I deserve
For someone who leaves behind
A life I can't do better
So I take it with a grain of salt
For the other means I wonder
Why it doesn't keep you
Up at night
Up at night
Up at night
Up at night
Like it does me
And '85 was our best year
And she says it gets much worse
Before it gets any better
For the other means I wonder
Why it doesn't keep her up at night
Like it does me
And I have a sweet or two
For my only plus you say
They're getting bigger every day
For the other means I wonder
Why it doesn't keep him up at night
Like it does me
I locked the keys in your car
I'll be in your car
For now
I get a sour reply
From the other wheel that always
Rises to the occasion
For the other means I wonder
Why it doesn't keep you up at night
I locked the keys in your car
I'll be in your car
For now
Now I get what I deserve
For someone who leaves behind
A life I can't do better
For the other means I wonder
Why it doesn't keep you
Up at night
Up at night
Up at night
Up at night
Like it does me

these lyrics are scarily accurate to describe feelings. thank god theres people who put into words the things the rest of us just sit there and fritz about.
I thought of boobs when I heard "my only plus you say they're gettin' bigger every day." And I think what she may be taking with a grain of salt is him liking her for her body.
Thinking of the movie this was in, "Desert Blue", I think -cutest aeroplane- sounds right - foolin' around because they are lonely and do not have much else to do. It was a small town, same people every day. The movie is basically about the kids, so I do not agree with -commonInsanity-.
The ""I've been a mess for some time. | Now I get what I deserve. | For someone who leaves behind a | life I can't do better. " makes me think of the kid in the movie who's dad commits suicide, and he is troubled because of it and considers suicide. He cannot do his life any better than his dad could.
I think the songs about remembering a time in your life when you were at your most happiest yet knowing you won't top that, soo u kind of just go along with the flow of everyday life. 85 kind of makes me think of jenny's happiest year and her mom and dad being happy before they split.
Also to take something with a grain of salt is to not believe something completely. To kinda still have an ounce of doubt and caution. That's my take.
People seem to think that because Jenny is singing this, then it is sung from a woman's perspective. Or even that she wrote it, or that it is from her own personal experience. We all clearly know that this song is about love gone sour, but I think it's a story of a man. And since anyone can tell a story, Jenny is doing so. Besides, if '85 was their best year, it's clearly not about Jenny Lewis lol. Don't interpret everything so literally.
"You wanna fool around?" I ask. I get a sour reply. From the other wheel that always rises to the occasion.
I love that line. Jenny has the most beautiful voice ever.
Her voice is absolutely gorgeous. This was the first song I heard by Rilo Kiley, & I completely fell in love.
"I've been a mess for some time. Now I get what I deserve. For someone who leaves behind a life I can't do better. "
woooow.
what does she take with a grain of salt?
her life is a mess, and that is what she is taking with a grain of salt. so basically, what is going on in her life.
"So I take it with a grain of salt, for the other means I wonder why it doesn't keep you Up at night Up at night Up at night Up at night Like it does me."
I relate to that so much, I am in a long distance relationship that is killing me. That line reminds me of all those nights I am up freaking out because i'm not with him, while he sleeps soundly.
