Villa Rosie Lyrics

Practice doesn't make perfect when you're interbreeding
Speaking drivel, can it get confused with heavy breathing?
Mixing drinks at water holes get snarled up in the suburbs
Meandering through this and that, you're suspected of vagueness

When work is done, go to Villa Rosie every night
(So tasty)
Go form a queue at Villa Rosie every night
(So tasty)

Across the common every day, you come across the fine line
But wearing boots can prevent the leeches in the long grass
Eating between meals stifles the appetite; is it healthy?
Coming home, that nagging doubt there in your belly

And all the while, at Villa Rosie every night
(You're tasting)
A sweeter life at Villa Rosie every night
(So tasty)

All losers come to Villa Rosie every night
(They're waiting)
So form a queue at Villa Rosie every night
(So tasty)
Don't break your own back at Villa Rosie every night
(We're tasting)
A sweeter life at Villa Rosie every night
(So tasty)

It's a total pub song. Bunch of nebbish people get off work every night and head to Villa Rosie (the name of the pub) and get drunk ("so tasty").

There's more to it. I think the second verse is about a gardener ('leaches in the long grass').

I don't think this is a happy song at all! I LOVE villa rosie.

I've always got the impression it's about sad middle aged men visiting a brothel.

Villa Rosie sounds like an Essex pub. e.g. poor attempts at glitz, just north of London. The description of loutish people going to the pub after work, skipping dinner, drinking too much, trying to chat up some "birds" and generally frittering away your spare time and money - sounds much like a very British past-time in the 90's (and since?)

My Interpretation

i see it as a pre-cursor to Girls&Boys. Meeting at the watering-hole. Except in England you have a lot more to worry about than when you're in, say Magaluf!

How is this a happy song at all? I've always thought it had a grey and miserable feel.

There's definitley some hidden sexual meanings. Possibly about catching some sort of STD i.e crabs through oral sex.

"Practice doesn't make perfect when you're interbreeeding Speaking drivel, can it get confused with heavy breathing?"

"But wearing boots can prevent the leaches in the long grass Eating between meals stifles the appetite, is it healthy? Coming home, that nagging doubt there in your belly"

the leeches in the grass probably being the crabs.

I've always thought it was about a brothel.

I didn't dig deeper into the lyrics, but "Villa Rosie" sounds like a name of a brothel to me.
