A Song For Jeffrey Lyrics

Gonna lose my way tomorrow
Gonna give away my car
I'd take you along with me
But you would not go so far
Don't see what I do not want to see
You don't hear what I don't say
Won't be what I don't want to be
I continue in my way

Oh, ceased to see where I'm going.
I've ceased to see where I'm going.
I've ceased to see where I'm going to.
I don't want to.

Everyday I see the mornin' come on in the same old way
I tell myself tomorrow brings me things I would not dream today

Gonna lose my way tomorrow
Gonna give away my car
I'd take you along with me
But you would not go so far
Don't see what I do not want to see
You don't hear what I don't say
Won't be what I don't want to be
I continue in my way

Oh, ceased to see where I'm going.
I've ceased to see where I'm going.
I've ceased to see where I'm going to.
I don't want to.

I always thought the refrain went "I've ceased to see where I'm going" but whatever. Great song anyhow.

@Juniper Prism - I thought that as well, and it says it better and makes more sense than the '...see, see, see...' that's plugged in there.

@Juniper Prism If you listen to the recently released BBC versions, it seems pretty clear that he is singing "don't see see see"

A great early Tull song with a sound that you have never heard before. The lyrics mean "I'm going to give up my day job and see where this music thing goes" and anybody who has ever done this will recognize this as an anthem of focused determination and blind optimism. It obviously paid off.

Would probably be a reference to Jeffery Hammond-Hammond, one of the members of the band, who at one point decided to leave the band, and go back to the study of art, which had actually been a his lifelong endeavor.

It was actually written long before Hammond left the band and is more likely about Hammond leaving behind his passion for art and instead playing bass for Tull. I've always though it was ceased as well.

I always liked the 1968 version with Ian playing this on the flute and vocals part of that Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus.

He had with him in the video Glenn Cornick - bass & harmonica (mimed as they called it) Tony Iommi - guitar (mimed) the future Black Sabbath legend Clive Bunker - drums (mimed)

Of course Ian Anderson would never fake (lip-sync) his classics. Must be why I knew he said "see, see, see where I'm going"

John Gee, of the Marquee, asked them to write a song for Jeffrey, a friend of Johns that led a vulnerable, rebellious and somewhat disorganised life. John Gee a great supporter of the group wanted to help to inspire change and encourage Jeffrey to remain his friend and closest of companions.

The song is indeed directed to Jeffrey Hammond, though I believe it was meant to be a parting song. Before Tull was formed, both Anderson and Hammond were part of a group called The John Evan Band (or Smash). As you may guess, that group also had future Tull keyboardist John Evan. Anyway, after the group broke up, Ian formed a new group that eventually became Jethro Tull, while Hammond wanted to study art. One can assume Jeff was trying to talk Ian out of the music scene, and this song is Ian's reply.

The lyrics are Oh, ceased to see where I'm going. I've ceased to see where I'm going. I've ceased to see where I'm going to. I don't want to.
