For Tomorrow Lyrics
He's a twentieth century boy
With his hands on the rails
Trying not to be sick again
And holding on for tomorrow
London ice cracks on a seamless line
He's hanging on for dear life
And so we hold each other tightly
And hold on for tomorrow, singing:
La, la la l-la, la, la la, l-la l-la la-la-la
La, la la l-la, la, la la, l-la l-la la-la-la
La, la la l-la, la, la la, l-la l-la la-la-la
Holding on for tomorrow
She's a twentieth century girl
With her hands on the wheel
Trying not to make him sick again
Seeing what she can borrow
London's so nice back in your seamless rhymes
But we're lost on the Westway
So we hold each other tightly
And we can wait until tomorrow, singing:
La, la la l-la, la, la la, l-la l-la la-la-la
La, la la l-la, la, la la, l-la l-la la-la-la
La, la la l-la, la, la la, l-la l-la la-la-la
Holding on for tomorrow
We're trying not to be sick again
And holding on for tomorrow
She's a twentieth century girl
Holding on for dear life
And so we hold each other tightly
And hold on for tomorrow, singing:
La, la la l-la, la, la la, l-la l-la la-la-la
La, la la l-la, la, la la, l-la l-la la-la-la
La, la la l-la, la, la la, l-la l-la la-la-la
Holding on for tomorrow
(Jim stops and gets out of the car
Goes to a house in Emperor's Gate
Through the door and to his room
Then he puts the TV on
Turns it off and makes some tea
Says modern life, well that's rubbish)
I'm holding on for tomorrow
(Then Susan comes into the room
She's a naughty girl with a lovely smile
Says, 'let's take a drive to Primrose Hill
It's windy there, and the view's so nice.'
London ice can freeze your toes, like anyone, I suppose)
You're holding on for tomorrow
With his hands on the rails
Trying not to be sick again
And holding on for tomorrow
He's hanging on for dear life
And so we hold each other tightly
And hold on for tomorrow, singing:
La, la la l-la, la, la la, l-la l-la la-la-la
La, la la l-la, la, la la, l-la l-la la-la-la
Holding on for tomorrow
With her hands on the wheel
Trying not to make him sick again
Seeing what she can borrow
But we're lost on the Westway
So we hold each other tightly
And we can wait until tomorrow, singing:
La, la la l-la, la, la la, l-la l-la la-la-la
La, la la l-la, la, la la, l-la l-la la-la-la
Holding on for tomorrow
And holding on for tomorrow
Holding on for dear life
And so we hold each other tightly
And hold on for tomorrow, singing:
La, la la l-la, la, la la, l-la l-la la-la-la
La, la la l-la, la, la la, l-la l-la la-la-la
Holding on for tomorrow

I was so pleased when I saw that this song is on the Best Of (it really is a great compilation). Anyway, it seems to be a pretty simple song about trying to cope with life as a young poor person in freezing London.
This is my favourite song in the world!
I'm going to take a different angle. I think this is a patchwork, a montage of London, and and what makes London/being a Londoner so great. I think it's a celebration of London retaining it's character in the midst of widespread early 90's Americanisation.
This is yet another stereotypical Blur song debating about the materiality and meaning of life. The violins are brilliant, as are Damon's lyrics "Modern life, well it's rubbish". I saw him later say on TV that if we couldn't understand that, there was no point explaining it. Enough said.
i agree with reactor, except for Damon (and the rest of the band) are all middle class art school children.
Only Graham and Alex went to art school (Goldsmith's). Damon is a drama school dropout.
An absolute classic
i concur
"Holding on for dear life" is a reference to watching the world whizz by while you take a back seat. Which is something i try to do more and more since hearing this song.
This is an amazing song. I love the bit where Damon sings too bits at once. I hope this kinda song appear on their new album due for realease around spring 06.
Google image search 'Primrose Hill'. Some little beauty has written 'And the views so nice' on the brow of the hill. Awesome.
One of the best blur songs lyrically i reckon: "then he puts the TV on, turns it off and makes some tea, says "Modern Life well it's Rubbish, i'm holding of for tomorrow!"
Absolute genius.
