Death of a Party Lyrics
The death of the party
Came as no surprise
Why did we bother?
Should have stayed away
Another night
And I thought "Well, well"
Go to another party and hang myself
Gently on the shelf
The death of the teenager
Standing on his own
Why did he bother?
Should have slept alone
Another night
And I thought "Well, well"
Go to another party and hang myself
Gently on the shelf
Another night
And I thought "Well, well"
Go to another party and hang myself
Gently on the shelf
Came as no surprise
Why did we bother?
Should have stayed away
Another night
And I thought "Well, well"
Go to another party and hang myself
Gently on the shelf
The death of the teenager
Standing on his own
Why did he bother?
Should have slept alone
Another night
And I thought "Well, well"
Go to another party and hang myself
Gently on the shelf
Another night
And I thought "Well, well"
Go to another party and hang myself
Gently on the shelf

This song is obviously about AIDS. People who go to parties and have unprotected sex with strangers. Eventually it's going to catch up with you, bite you in the arse and your party will be over.
I don't think Damon was ever into singing songs about moody teenagers feeling unloved at a party.
it's about aids. they said that in one of the band's biographies.

Yep, this was Blur basically saying that Britpop was a waste of time (despite having predicted it with Popscene). Being one of the originators of the genre, and lets admit, basically the godfathers of Britpop, when they say that Britpop (the party) is over, it simply is.
I can see all of those theories working for this song. However, as most songs with lyrics go, it's about how YOU interpret it. I agree with the wallflower posts, but at the end he ends up sleeping with someone he shouldn't have and it just ruins everything. I get this feeling that it's ultimately about how parties are just a way of being someone you aren't especially if you aren't really a partier... you just feel like you're degrading your integrity. The death of a teenager lyric, i think, stands for losing the last piece of his innocence and integrity. Anyway, that's how I see it and associate with it. Excessive partying can disintegrate your soul.
I must say that tjrcash theory is the most reliable one. Every song doesn't have to have only one meaning. True artists can squeeze in multi-meanings in one work. It's no idea that I say what I think this song is about. tjrcash description says it all.

"Go to another party and hang myself" social suicide, knows what he's doing is wrong but can't help himself. Seen some people talk about aids, so probably that
why the hell hasn't anyone posted on this yet? In fact, why the hell are there so few posts on this section in general? I love blur. Amazing band.
Anyway... this is one of my absolute favorite songs. I love how it starts out slow and soft, and in chorus speeds up just slightly.. it's beautiful. The lyrics are amazing. It sounds like Damon's thinking about past mistakes, or a teenager regretting something he did - at a party, maybe.
I'm going to have to agree with Mizerable here. WHy the hell are we the only Blur fans? Personally, the self titled blur CD is my third favorite album of all time, and every single song (with the exception of chinese bombs) is good enough to be made a single.
yeah im with u guys, blur are the most coolist thing ever, saw them at leeds 2003 absolutly amazing, got to the front row and ive seen them at wolverhampton too, really really good. more ppl should listen to the not so well known songs by blur, look inside america and strange news from another star are amazing. there are some gems on blur albums that ppl dont listen to, listen out 4 them, there all very impresive.
Correct again Dougievile. Anyone heard the fan club released version of Death of a Party? Its acoustic and, as much as i like the album version, is a far better track.
Yes, I've heard the accoustic version. The lyrics are a little different to what's posted here too.
Brilliantly haunting.
