Michael Lyrics

michael, where are you now?

somehow in my excitement the last time you called,
it slipped again to ask your hidden whereabouts
i got a lead from your old triple ex-girlfriend, she said
"i heard he lost his mind again"
"again?" i said
i didn't know that you ever did

michael, where are you now?

sleeping through the morning in flannel impaired
getting high in southern air
shoeless, sandy eveing down the unfamiliar
last whiff of salt-water freedom
skipping shells in the dead zone
with the ghost on your side
of the state borderline
whispering
"take it. . ."

do you remember our first subway ride?
our first heavy metal haircuts?
our last swim on the east coast?
and me with my ridiculous looking pierced nose?
i remember your warm smile in the sun
the daydreaming boy without a shirt on
the birmingham barfly father
left the mother of three sons
you're the oldest juvenile delinquent bum
my best friend

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZbnoDxHbwzE&NR=1 He talks about Micheal in this interview. How a little while back he was playing a show in Atlanta and had a visit bacstage from the very Michael who the song is about, he hadn't seen him in over a decade. While onstage later on he heard someone scream out 'Micheal', so he played the song for the first time in years, and he could see Michael weeping in the front row.

one of the most beautiful Mark Kozelek's lyrics. He wrote this song thinking about a real friend of him who became a delinquent...

this is one of my favorite... one of the best songs about friendship ever written, about a friend who is really special like best friends are, and he's in trouble, alone, in need, maybe even dead now... I don't know whether mark kozelek wrote this one thinking about someone he knew (does anybody know??) but he expresses it thee way it is...with high level poetry "...shoeless sandy evenings down the unfamiliar last whiff of salt water freedom"...it's freakin' great!!!

worth listening enjoy the lyrics

I wonder if Kozelek knew the song Michael by Jandek (http://songmeanings.com/songs/view/3530822107858602537/ & https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubEb-CeKtL0) when he wrote this song.

Beautiful song. I also have a childhood best friend named Mike, who I have recently gotten back in touch with. So it means a lot to me, having lived out many of these experiences for the first time with him
